The will also listed a $1,500 mortgage to Maggie McCarthy She charged seven percent interest (which was to be paid se m ia n n u a lly ). The to tal amount was due July 3. 1919 A $500 mortgage was due on Aug. 18. 1919, from Josephine H Booth, draw ing interest at eight per cent and due semiannually Also due a t som e unspecified date was a $370 second mortgage by a Margaret Nelson, at eight percent and payable an nually At the tim e of Rowe’s death, $20 had been paid Interestingly enough, out of the five mortgages listed in Rowe's will, four of them were with women, The women were sold property after her husband’s death on March 20. 1914. It was her husband who had entered into the agree ment to sell land to the Rhododendron M in e ra l Springs Land Company, not her There are hints that each of these women, like Rowe, were without husbands and each was investing in a financial cushion for their later years in life. The resort area was becoming popular and the land values were sure to increase Whatever happened to three of the four of these widows is not known The only cne recognized by h is to ry is S u s e tte Franzette, whose husband. Em il, had died on Nov 18, 1918 Not only did Rowe leave behind considerable pro p erty in the town of Rhododendron, but also in Columbia County and in the Holladay and Wheeler ad ditions in Portland The outstanding mor tgages on land sold show that $3,500 was still owed by the R h o d o d e n d rr . M in e ra l Springs Land Company from a $5,000 agreement entered into on April 12, 1912 The remain ing halance was two years past due as o rigin ally agreed upon The R h o d o d en d ro n M in e ra l Springs Land Company was an Oregon corporation that was found ed on March 20, 911. by her husband for the purpose of developing a scenic tourist a ttra c tio n in the area th ro u g h re a l e s ta te development and mineral springs A $3.000 mortgage was due on Dec 1, 1921, from Susette Franzette, owner of the historic Rhododendron Tavern She had purchased the majority of the land, which now is Rhododendron, for $1 down and six percent in te r e s t. T h a t was in November. 1918. In Rowe's w ill it is estimated that at the time she entered into agreement with Franzette on Nov 29. 1918, that 38 lots west of the Zigzag River were worth a mere $25 a piece Thirty three lots east of the river, where the town’s business district is now located, were estimated to BURGLAR FIRE SECURITY ALARMS Gresham Alarm In ous/nots t/.»co FS6S Wagnar Haavy Duty Powar Patntar OaWall 10" Upparcut ' Tabla Saw f SAVE 7 8 .9 0 #DC500-Reg. 4.99 *381 Rockwell 9" Tablesaw 634-580-Reg. 239.95 »423 »«/» Qm M r *» i P ------ SANDY------ CLOSED CIRCUIT T.V. • FREEZER ALARMS Rag 118 8V KW280 WHILE 4 PER STORE LAST O O 1 SAVE 2 0 .0 5 *125 Rag 1S4.85 »W3S0 WHILE 3 PER STORE LAST Economy 2" x 4" Building Studs FOR ■ Reg. 49* each Complete with nails • First 50 per customer, additional at regular price ■"A — -, ' us*. w 49,, Reg 9.49 • Seale heeling and cooling ducts • Use indoors or out r«u*e< Pw# /k-am »< faune «a*» 1 O J tor , SAVE 0B* on Reg 5.99 • Plastic 6 voit iMntern for home, camping cat or boat • »AC146 0M<Pwa- IM 84 *** he« »79 39373 Proctor, P.O.
