March I I , 1982 Cat lovers have little trouble putting up with normal bouts o f feline hnickiness That trait ma\ be part o f why we love them But there's nothing that brings out the worst in cats— and cat ow ners — as does traveling Some cats adapt m eek to travel, and even come to enjoy it. If that's your cat, you're lucky. If not, members o f the Research Advisory Board at Lowe's Inc Don’t like motion According to Dr. Robert Stansbury, noted feline veter inarian, Long Beach, C a lif , and a member o f Lowe's Re search Advisory Board, the prim ary reason cats dislike traveling is that they become disonented by motion. “ Cats do actually get motion sick ness.” Stansbury states, “ and some become hyperactive to the point o f hysteria Plus, •hey're generally in a new en vironment, which adds to their in se cu rity. T h e re fo re ," he adds, " it is best to prepare your cat as well as you can for travel A good way to acclimate your cat to travel is to take it on short car trips. Your cat w ill learn to trust you and short jaunts w ill help reduce its anx iety. \ls o , consider the time o f day and year you’ll be trav eling. Watch feeding The key to your cat’s travel ing com fort is to make careful pieparations before and during the trip To reduce the chances o f nausea, don’, feed your ca, for at least eight hours and withhold water approximately two hours before departure I f your trip is longer than 24 hours, plan a stop so you can feed and exercise your cal Take along its fam iliar feeding dishes, favorite food and pro vide fresh water It is best to feed it at the end o f the day. perm itting tim e fo r proper digestion before taking o ff again. Never allow your cat to remain loose in a strange place; tuck in a leash fo r emergencies. A disposable litte r box, available in most pet-supply stores, and a bag o f ca, box filler are important travel sup plies for your cat’s toile, needs If traveling by car, the litter box can be se, on the floor o f the back seat, or can be kept in the trunk for use during rest stops Use a name brand ca, box filler for maximum odor control. Use carrier Whether you're traveling by car. plane, train, ous or boat, the safest way to transport your ca, is in a secure and well- ventilated basket or carrier. Prominently indicate on the carrier that there's a live cat inside, to avoid rough han dling and reduce the possibil ity o f curious people opening the cage A traveling pet ken nel with a top door makes it easier to place your cat inside and get it out again. If your cat has never ridden in a carrier, introduce it to your pet a week or two before the journey Put in a few o f your cat's favorite toys to make it feel at home. Check with ve, If your cat continues to be come hysterical upon travel ing. you may find it necessary to use oral sedatives p re scribed by your veterinarian.
