Hood Hospice spent two years laying ground work for its operation, touching more than 55,000 area residents w ith its message Now that the health care service is operating, it is still spreading the word about hospice care A course, co-sponsored by Mt Hood Hospice and Mt Hood Community Col lege, opens a 10-week ses sion March 29 It's intended for persons who are in te re s te d in b e co m in g hospice volunteers or who have a professional or non professional interest in the concept of hospice care for the term inally ill. I t focuses on the sociological, physiological and psychological aspects of hospice care. Inquiry is made into various issues on dying, death and bereave ment, with attention given to social processes, pain and symptom control and West theme o f Firwood carnival fun The Firwood Western Koedown Carnival w ill be held Friday at Firwood School from 6 30 to 9 p m. There w ill be 12 games, made by the fathers of Fir- wood students, to test one’s skills. Proposed is 350 units in an area between Miller Road and Blue Jay Lane, which lies both north and south of Highway 26 The d e v e lo p e r’ s representative, Boatwright Engineering Inc., also of Salem, has already studied the drainage of the area They have proposed that the development’s storm sewers be channeled into “ recognized” wetlands ad- mininistered by the Bureau of Land M anagem ent, located just south of the proposed subdivision. A subdivision has been proposed by C a rl M. H alvorson In c., called Tillikum Woods, east of M iller Road and south of Highway 26. About 500 units would be constructed on 200 acres All three developers of the subdivisions requested that this now-disputed area be included in the Hoodland Service District. This was after they met with county representatives on Dec 26, 1979 Annexation was com pleted on April 6, 1960 by the Portland Metropolitan Area Local Government Boundary Commission The Alderwood site is to be visited today by the Clackamas County Board of County Commissioners They are going to view the area prior to rendering a decision on whether to allow a conditional-use per m it for the development That decision is to be made at a hearing to be held on March 8 at 9 a m. in the chambers of the county commissioners Cook said that he did not know if the information col lected Friday would be utilized by the commis sioners in making their decision, but he said that it would be included in a revised draft of the Mt Hood Community Plan A public hearing on the revised plan is scheduled to go before the Planning Commission on May 10 and before the commissioners on May 26 Cook said that the revis ed plan w ill be submitted to the LCDC for approval the latter part of May Included w ill be the recognized wetlands and proper ordinance changes “If we did It rig h t,” said Cook, “ then it (the Com prehensive Plan) w ill be acknowledged ” delivery of medical care Fam ily dynamics and philosophical and ethical questions are also address cd Classes w ill meet each Monday from 7 to 10 p m at MHCC Room 1001. That w ill discuss life threatening illness, disease process and treatment, the role of the hospice physi cian and pain control “ Religion, Suffering and Suicide" deals with ter- minally ill attitudes toward s u ffe rin g and su icid e , stages of dying and man's concept of religion and the role of a spiritual leader A pril 19. the discussion w ill center on psycho social needs, focusing on con fidentially, active listen ing, establishing relation ships and fam ily dynamics Nursing w ill be focus on April 26 and May 3. Funeral and Closure" w ill be discussed May 10. That w ill center around funeral home visitation, types and expenses, burial and cremation, memorial societies, and organ and tissue donation The psychological and physiological aspects of death w ill be explored May 17 in “ Dynamics of Death and Dying ” “ G rie f and Bereave m ent" is scheduled May 24 It deals with stages of grief, consoling the con so le r, g rie f and s e lf- identity, and bereavement as a life process An overview and panel discussion w ill close the class June 7. Biggs retired after being associated with Clackamas County Bank for 40 years as counsel and director.
