Day kindles worldwide awareness
More than 200 girls gathered at East Orient Grade
School Saturday to celebrate Alpine Thinking Day
The annual event is a celebration of the birthdays of
Lord and Lady Baden Powell who originated the
worldwide movement that became known as Girl
Scouts It is traditionally a day set aside to recognize
the international scope of scouting
Twenty-four troops from Orient, Cottrell, Boring,
Damascus. Kelso, Sandy and Firwood experienced an
international flavor with the range of their activities

Union Academy, she began
beauty school and later
worked as a hair tylist in
Gresham.

in Gresham. He died Feb
16 in a Portland hospital.
Born May 23, 1913, in
Fruita, Colo., he grew up in

graduated from high school
in Sparks, Nev, He was
em ployed by Southern
Pacific Railroad for 39
years in Sacramento, Calif
At the time of his retire
ment in 1973, he was a
supervisor
Shortly after retirement,
he moved to the Kelso area
w h ere he owned and
operated a tree farm He
had recently moved to
Portland
He married Anne Louise

Born Aug. 24, 1893 in
Brno, Czechoslovakia, she
came to America when she
was 27 She married Frank

Wash., in 1921. He died in
1963
She was a homemaker
and enjoyed raising and a r
ranging flowers She lived
on Jadrny Road in Sandy,
which was named for her
husband’s family
Survivors include two
sons. Frank Jr and Ed
ward, both of Sandy, two
daughters, Bessie Milner of
Manteca, Calif . and Lydia
Palmer of Molalla, nine
grandchildren and seven
grandchildren She is also

survived by several sisters
still living in Europe.
Burial was at Forest
