Free throws key to SUHS win Photo by Scoti Newton Hob Spradling brado down hill during a Valley League rare at .Multorpor Sweet Home edges SUHS wrestlers Tim Sytsma wrestled competitively for only 10 seconds last week That's how long it took the Sandy heavyweight to pin his opponent last week at Sweet Home The win gives him a 20 o record, As a team, the Pioneers fell last Thursday, 31-28, The score was 28-6 by the time the wrestlers in the heavier weights, beginning with Dan Martin, took to the mat Martin's opponent was described by Coach Ron Calhoun as a “ tough kid, but not an outstanding wrestler Just a scrapper ” Martin won by a fall Chuck Kearney got his record to 20-0 with a 15-5 win. He wrestled a “ big, p o w e rfu l k id ,” said Calhoun. “ But as the match pro gressed we wore him down The kid got pretty battered up," he said “As a matter of fact, they hauled him off to the doctor to get his shoulder checked He got bumped around so much that they weren't sure he was all together ” Cal McKinnis wrestled up at 178 He trades off with Kearney, with Kearney often taking the tougher op ponent as he can use the competition But,* said Calhoun. “ It doesn't make any d if ference, Cal pins 'em either way “ We really surprised the Sweet Home coach because they didn’t think ihat could ever happen < McKinnis's first period pin, "Of course, they surpris ed us at 191 because I didn't think that would happen, either ” R and y C a rm o n y . Sandy's 191 pounder, was downed 4-1. Carmony is now 19-3 Martin is 19 1 and McKin nis is 18-2 In the five upper weight divisions, Sandy is 96-6. C alhoun was not displeased with those in the lower weights. He said that Mel Gedde, a 106 pounder, showed a lot of heart Robert Paul, in his first outing, ran into one of Sweet Home's tougher wrestlers at 130 Randy Swanson, at 115, ran into a state champion That’s the second state champion, and third state qualifier, he's faced since Christmas , Mike Rohweder, wrestl ing up a weight class at 136, came through for Sandy, pinning a good opponent in the first round.
