6~ SANDY (O r* ) POST Thur» Jonuory 28 »982 ($*c 2) Sandy woman Son’s by S C O T T NEWTON It would bother some mothers to have a son do ing police work But that doesn t seem to be the case with Martha Williams of Sandy, whose son John D. (Jack) recent ly retired after 27 and a half years with the Oregon State Police Look at working in the woods,” Mrs W illiam s said ” You don't know when a tree's going to fall on you. "W hen your num ber comes up. that's it ” Still, Mrs Williams will admit to one time when it bothered her a little that her son was a policeman There was a case about three years ago where a man kidnapped a taxi driver, and left him for dead n e a r P en d leton Williams was the first to in vestigate He pulled his car up to a haystack, which he was go ing to search, when the farmer and owner of the field drove up. Williams drove the patrol car away from haystack and went over and talked to the farmer He never got aroun< to checking the haystack. The alleged murderer was reportedly in the haystack with a gun aimed at Williams. “ It (John D .’s police work) bothered me then, after I found out about it,” Mrs Williams admitted. Overall, her when your num ber's-up it's-up a t titude has served her in more ways than one “ I had a chance to go to Europe a number of years ago, and I'd never ridden on a plane, and that scared m e,” she said “ But then I got to think ing, ‘Shoot, if anything's going to happen it's going to happen to me sitting right in this chair.' "So. I got on the plane and went to Europe ” She toured 10 countries in 30 days, and enjoyed Paris She also liked Scotland, but admitted it might have been partly because she's Scottish She's also been to Hawaii and the Caribbean, but said, “ My traveling days are over ” It's too expensive to travel now, she said She is a member of Eastern Star, and the Golden Age club, and does work for the Presbyterian Church In fact, she was re c e n tly s e le c te d as deaconess H er hobbies include ceramics and sewing She made all her Christmas gifts this year And, she still gets to an occasional ball game, a Williams family tradition. Martha's husband, John H , who died in 1963, played s e m i-p ro b a s e b a ll in Nebraska John D played Class D ball in Jessup, Geo . after serving in the Air Force M ilitary Police. While in the service, he played on the Misaw (Air Force base, team, which won the Far East cham pionship, which included Japan, Guam and the Ph'lippines They also won the interservice (against the other branches of the service) Far East title John D s youngest son, Jim, 22 and a farmer, played on a Babe Ruth team that qualified for a national tournament, and Larry, 27 and a carpenter, still plays slo pitch, with Martha making an occa sional game After a year in Georgia. Williams moved back to Sandy, where he worked in Walter Cook's sawmill on the west end of town Having worked for three and a half years in the ser vice as an air policeman, it was just n a tu ra l that Williams get back into police work. He got on with the OSP. and was statio n ed in Pendleton, where he's been ever since “ He could’ve moved,” Mrs Williams said, “but he thought too much of his kids to interrupt their schooling ” John Williams is also recently completed eight years on the Pendleton Roundup board, where he’s worked the past five years coordinating the activities of the Um atilla Indians The Pendleton Roundup, one of the largest rodeos in the United States, “runs like clockwork,” Williams said. Williams was given a beaded money bag at his time to take advantage of his experience He was a criminal in vestigator for 12 years. In what time's left over retirement dinner His wife received a beaded purse And, when the woman who presented the gifts to the Williams realized that Martha was there, “ she took the shaw off her back and gave it to my mother ” A letter from Governor Victor Atiyeh was read at the banquet, which said, in part. “ I thank you on behalf of all Oregonians for a job well done ” It doesn't appear that Williams is having much trouble keeping busy since his retirement. He's already built an of fice in the basement. It is there he will operate the Williams Investigation and Supoena Service. Being 51, he's got some Williams, a self avowed avid hunter and fisherman, should have no trouble fill ing the void And his wife, JoAnne, whom he me and married while in Miami, Fla . dur ing the last of his stint in the service, has had the maps out We can brake you, tire you ft shock you! . but the price is right, and the work is, too!
