4 — S A N O * (O r« ) ROST Thurs Jonwory 28 19B2 (See 2) P T A told role models determine drug use b> MIC H A EL P JOSES Past ( wrrrspundent The concern «bout the use and abuse of drugs at Welches Grade School is being explored by the school's PTA through a lee- ture series The first presentation was mad** by a represen tative of the Comprehen sive Options for Drug Abuse i CODA i, a Portland based organization which offers a drug free outpa (le n t c lin ic and a methadone maintenance program, as well as a residential facility N ik k i Johnson, a counselor with CODA, told the PTA at its Jan 13 meeting that the word drugs, "pushes every scare button we have' because it re p re s e n ts so m eth in g unknown to a lo, of parents She said that "you can talk to your kids until you are blue in the face." but the biggest influence will be role models and peer pressure She said that they may try drugs, and that there is little they, as parents, can do Experim entation is "just the nature of the c rit ter " Johnson said that by the time today's kids finish high school, 70 to 80 percent will have tried drugs and 20 percent will be regular users, while five to ten per cent w ill be c h ro n ic abusers Some will be recreational users only, and other will be mixing various types of drugs, including alcohol and other drugs together To combat continual drug use Johnson recom mended that parents and teachers provide the best information possible on drugs This will insure that the information is accurate and "doesn’t come from so meone selling drugs " She said that this infor m a tio n should be in libraries and should be con tinually updated Students will begin ex perimenting when there is access, said Johnson G enerally the first in troduction they will ex perience will be through the fa m ily m e d ic in e cabinet Here they can ex perim ent with valiu m , tranquilizers, sleeping pills and even asprin Also, tobacco and alcohol will play an important role in the beginning of their ex p e rim e n ta tio n w ith chemical abuse.
