'9 8 2 (S*< 1) Gresham downs SUHS swimmers Senior Gayle Roth, and her b ro th e r, freshm an M att Roth, set school records in a swim meet against Gresham Thurs day, but their efforts were not enough to get the Pioneers past the Gophers. The boys got five first- place fin is h e s (in 10 events), and five second- place finishes, but did not have the depth to win, fa ll ing 8» 66 However, the boys set II personal records in 16 op portunities “ That has to say som ething," Coach Mark Smith said “ I was very pleased with the effort the boys put forth ’’ Matt Roth set a school in the 100 back The record was held by his brother C h ris , a N a tio n a l In terscholastic Swimming Coaches of America all- American in 1977 (The elder Roth, by the way, has qualified for the NCAA na tionals He competes for th e U n iv e r s ity of Washington > The score of the boys meet is identical to the score of the Gresham dual last year. Since this is a younger team, it indicates to Smith that the future is bright for the boys. Smith was also pleased with the efforts and en thusiasm of the girls team, although they lost 82-71. Six girls turned in per sonal best times Gayle Roth set a school record in the 200 IM, break ■ ing Katie Neuenfeldt’s 1976 mark Roth s record was set in a good race, in which she beat Gresham's Sue Elury by 17hundredths of a se cond The Pioneer swimmers had only four days of prac tice going into the meet "M a n y of them fu lly realize that they need to work harder than they are w o rk in g ." The Pioneers, with an overtim e upset v ic to ry over West Linn, a 75-60 win over Molalla and a 57 45 win over Estacada, were 3-0 as far as games that count. “ We’re real happy to be where we are," Brisbin said “ We're working real hard to try to stay at the top of the league " The next couple of weeks w ill pretty much tell the story “ It won't be easy The kids realize that," Brisbin said.
