Thur» The Srfndy Post Sports Pioneer girls zoom past CHS by SCOTT NEWTON Three factors were significant in the Sandy girls 62 28 win over Centennial Monday night Rut it wasn't anything that hasn't been happening all season Senior Dawn New scored 28 points, senior Cindy Me Coy grabbed 13 rebounds, and sophomore Sharon Jensen had six steals If these people continue to be consistent, we'II be in most games we play. Coach John Smith said He said that they needed the win for a couple of reasons First of all. it evens the Pioneers record at 3-3 Also, it helps to erase the memory ot a recent lopsid ed loss to Jackson The Pioneers, working on a "good scouting report" from Molly Knudsen, assistant coach, achieved the goals they set for themselves They capitalized on an advantage in quickness, grab bing defensive rebounds and making good outlet passes to start the fast break And, they shut down 5-10 senior Rachel Sudul She didn't play much, due to foul problems, and didn’t score a point Smith said that it s gratifying to have something work out as planned He said that Sudul is an aggressive player, and so he told his players to take the ball inside, to force the issue a little It worked, as Sudul fouled out The Pioneers didn't suffer from the Christmas layoff Monday at Centennial "They were definitely ready to play, I thought,” Smith said After a three-day break or Christmas, they practic a l Saturday and Sunday, having a good practice Sun day Smith said that junior Peggie Gillies played excep tionally well Monday She scored three of four shots from the free throw line and pulled down seven re bounds Kellie Garlock. a 5-7 junior, did a good job in relief of New and McCoy at the post, Smith said He added that he wants junior Ami Aschoff to start shooting more. She's a good shooter, he said, pointing out that she’s made 50 percent of her shots from the field this year Aschoff grabbed six rebounds Monday “ The defense played as well as they have all season," he said Junior Linda Mosbrucker and Jensen did a good job on top, Smith said, with New blocking seven shots to keep things shut down in the middle Smith, who used the entire bench, said that he was pleased with the aggressive play of senior Shelly Petrie and sophomore J ill Ingram “ I was impressed with the way the bench went in and kept things rolling for us,” he said Sl'HS had 17 offensive rebounds, easily a season high Smith was pleased with the fact that New grabbed eight rebounds, saying "that was the key for us tonight."
