8 SANDY (Or« ) POST Thur* October 22. * 9 8 1 (S«< 1) Fewer hunters had better luck Deer season opener most successful in years by KEN h l B K I \ Oregon Department of Kish and W ildlife ‘‘The best opener in years,” was how staff big game biologist Bob Jubber termed the success of Oregon's general deer season opener Although reports indicated few er hunters in many a re a s, success was up substantially Weather conditions were nearly perfect w ith rain prior to and in some areas during the opening weekend It was the firs t tim e in several years that the woods were anything but hot, dry and noisy for the beginning of buck season Low tem p e ra tu re s and snow showers in the Cascade Mountains had started some early eastward d rift of mule deer, putting more of the animals in reach of m ajor Recreation volleyball Castile Construction won two matches last week, which moved them into a first place tie with Mountain Country Realty in “ A ” d iv i sion volleyball action C a s tile C o n s tru c tio n avenged an earlier loss to Mountain Country Realty tiy winning 15-5, 10 15 and 15-11 They also defeated Calamity Jane's, w inning 15-5and 15-2 In the evening's th ird match. Mountain Country Realty spiked well, beating Calamity Jane's 15 7, 15-3 Carlson Chevrolet w ill tx* moving up to “ A ” division Carlson and Bucklxiard Piz za are undefeated in firs, half play Carlson C hevrolet won 15-1«, 15 «, over the Mt Hood Cleaners las, week, and then downed The Store 15-11,14 16 and 15 8 Buckboard Pizza, serving well, overcame Joe Koch Ford 15-11, 15-9 Truck Designs won its firs, match 15 2, 15 9, and The Store came from behind to down Mt Hood Cleaners 8 15, 15 11 and 15 6 hunter numbers Hunter numbers varied around the state, Jubber said In Deschutes County numbers increased for the second y e a r in a row , perhaps in response to good d e e r p o p u la tio n s , hut perhaps partly because of its closer proxim ity to western Oregon population centers compared to more easterly units In southeast Oregon all areas except Harney County show ed s u b s ta n tia l d e c re a s e s in h u n te r numbers, and in northeast Oregon all counties except Union and Wallowa showed opening weekend decreases In spite of reduced hunter numbers, however, success was up substantially in most areas In western Oregon, Jubber said, the Cascades in Linn, Douglas and Jackson coun ties at,rated more hunters for opening weekend this year w hile Lane County showed a decrease Overall, the hunting pressure in western Oregon was down for opening weekend in spite of ideal conditions As on the east side, however, the hunters who went out were s u b s ta n tia lly m ore s u c cessful this year in taking deer Hunter success doubled in many parts of the state, Jub ber said, which relates to the excellent weather conditions ad good deer populations Jubber said there are in d ic a tio n s th a t h u n te rs traveling longer distances are staying longer, p a r t ic u l a r ly in n o rth e a s t Oregon The days of driving to a distant hunting area on successive weekends seem to be at an end w ith the ris ing cost of gasoline A new regulation was tried this year in the Trout Creek M o u n ta in s of south e a st Oregon Hunter numbers were lim ited to 2«) by per m it. but the hunters had their choice of bucks By contrast, the Steens Moun tain area has for several years also been under a hunter number lim itation, but hunters there are re quired to find a 4 point or better The philosophy in the Trout Creeks was to main ta in h u n tin g q u a lity by lim itin g hunter numbers, but let the hunter decide what kind of buck he or she wanted Field checks show ed a 22 percent success on the opening weekend with all bucks but one being 3 point or larger Steens Mountain hunters encountered some rough opening day weather on the west slope w ith fog, snow and generally poor visib ility Those who chose to hunt the east slope had the better Aerobic dancing offered The aerobic dancing class, sponsored by the city of San dy Recreation Department, has expanded The group which meets at Kelso School w ill now mix*, a t th e sch o o l M o n d a y through Thursday from 5:30 to 6 :4 5 p m The Cedar Ridge School group w ill meet from 7 15 to 8 30 p m each Tues day and Thursday Cos, for the class is $1 per class, payable in five week sessions To register, just show up for the class a, any meeting hunting and success on the opening weekend The eastern Oregon buck season has closed, but westside hunters still have until Nov 3, and in many northwest Oregon units the last five days w ill be open for any deer There are also a number of controlled hunts, mainly for antlerless deer that w ill lx* taking place in both eastern and western Oregon The perm its for those were offered earlier this summer, selected by computer drawing, and no more are available now The W illamette Unit re mains open through Nov 30 w ith e ith e r-se x h u n tin g allowed through the entire season for black tail deer tag holders Most of the area in th e W illa m e tte U n it, however, is in private owner ship and hunters should be certain to ge, per mission to hunt in this area Some 29 of Oregon’s 34 bighorn sheep hunters were successful this year in bagg mg a ram in a onee-in a lifetim e hunting experience All six hunters were suc cessful in two hunts on Hur ricane Divide in northeast Oregon This area features the Rocky Mountain bighorn species A ll other areas have the sm aller California bighorn All four hunters were suc cessful in a singlt* hunt in the Owyhee area Four out of five hunters took a ram in the first hunt on Steens Mountain and two of five t(M)k rams in a second lunt On Hart Mountain five of six hunters killed rams in the firs t season and all six hunters were successful in the second hunt V o lle y b a ll •la n d in g « W I.
