Clackamas is one of 18 western Oregon counties which will divide more than $83 million as its share of timber sale receipts from regon and California Railroad (O&C) revested lands d u rin g the last 11-month period S ecretary of In te rio r .James Watt has announced that the U S. government will also pay more than $2 7 million to 34 Oregon counties to compensate partially for federal lands within their boundaries that were tax ex empt during fiscal year 1981 The Clackamas County O&C funds to ta l $4,658,180 77 The county’s share of in- lieu of taxes payment is $51,105 The share of the O&C funds is based on the 1916 value of O&C land in Clackamas County com pared with the total O&C valuation in that year When the O&C railroad failed to live up to requirements of it railroad construction land grant, the federal govern ment repossessed the land in 1916 Under the 1937 O&C Act, the land is managed for sus tained timber yield, and other multiple uses Counties with such lands receive half of the gross revenues from timber sales while 25 percent is returned to the Bureau of Land Management for in vestment in land manage ment The in -lie u of taxes paym ents supplem ent revenues the federal govern ment regularly shares with local governments from the sales of resources harvested from the public lands COUPON Med. Argen tina. as part of a unique ex change program Alex B re w s te r was selected by the Gresham Rotary Club to be its interna tional exchange student from Notary district 510. which encompasses the area surrounding Sandy He will spend a full year in the South American country attending school and living with three* families District 510 of the Notary Club chooses approximately 35 students from Oregon and southern Washington to live and study in 20 different countries around the world The students are trained, spending several weeks together undergoing evalua- tions for their ability to the state Notary convention and a camping trip at the beach along the Oregon Coast During the trips they were evaluated for their ability to ge, along with people, meet and make friends, and good judgem ent when given freedoms in new situations penses of the exchange tu dent The club also hosts an exchange student for one year in the Gresham area I he students study during Shampoo Set or Shampoo Air wave The Notary ( lub has one of the most extensive exchange programs on the teenage level, as well as for graduate studies abroad and young businessmen Mex Brewster represent the Notary < lub and the free enterprise system of business This summer Brewster joined other participants for a week at Anthony Lakes, their high school junior year and are expected to return to their school and community, representing the culture of the country they visited The group is involved with cooperative programs with Notary Clubs around the world in ,he areas of human u n d e rsta n d in g and humanitarianism As the sponsoring club.
