At that tim e this group was called the Rhododendron Improvement Committee, and was the first organized citizen planning organization in Clackamas County In the fight to save the meadow, the Committee had to convince the Clackamas County Planning Division, as well as the county commissioners, that the develop merit was unsuitable because the meadow, though green withgrass. was actually wetlands I he battle ended when a resident rode a horse into the area eyed for development, and it sunk up to its bel ly That was in mid-August during a dry year. Today, 12 years later, the committe, now known as the Rhododendron Neighborhood Association, is still together and as concerned for the area as ever At the organization s annual meeting in September, officers were elected for another year They are Wendell Iobey, chairperson. Raymond “ Ike" Panon, \ i t e chairperson, and Beth Laker, secretary- treasurer ( olonel J B. People were asked to haul the garbage to the Eire Hall, then the committee pays the county to haul it to the dump Liere said a lot of tires were collected “ W’e have gotten old appliances and stuff like th a t," she said The committee tried to en courage recycling by men tioning recycling centers on theflyer and by reminding the people at the Eire Hall The advisory committee uses federal funds to do com m unity improvements in the area including the communi ty clean up days The com mittee is discussing a pro gram that would help area resident purchase paint to Family Vision Care Sign-up sheets were made a v a ila b le fo r those in terested in joining a par ticu la r group To achieve better com m u n ic a tio n b e tw e e n parents, teachers and the community, the PTA decid ed to publish a newsletter, “ The Boring S tory."
