10 SA N D Y ( O r . ) POST Thur» A u g u it 6 2) 1981 (S k Agency on aging members sought The Clackamas County Area /Xgency on Aging Ad visor) Council is seeking new members The council advises the County Board of Commis sioners on matters which af fect county residents 60 years of age or older Among the responsibilities are ad vising on how federal, state and count) funds are spent, advising on county policy and commenting on policies and procedures of other organizations which serve < lack a m as C ounty residents Persons interested in the position should submit and application form and an in troductor) letter The letter should detail reasons why the individual would like to serve on the council and describe the in d iv id u a l's background Applications and further in fo rm a tio n is a v a ila b le from Lyle Remington In te re s te d persons should w rite to Clackamas County Area Agency on Aging, P O Box 32, M aryIhurst, OR, 97036, or call 655 8463 The council includes some 29 members, including Ruth Baumback of Sandy A ll ap pointments are for a three year term The next council meeting w ill be Aug 10at9 3 0 a m at the Oregon C ity Senior Center, 615 5th St., Oregon City The public is invited to attend Mid-September too late for MHCC registration Students who wait until the middle of September to register for fall classes at Mt Hood Community Col lege may lx* too late, accor ding to president Or R Stephen Nicholson A combination of factors mas mean that the college won't fw able to handle all the students who want to take tall classes, Nicholson said Those who register dur mg August will get the ■ lasses they want, but those who wait until September might find that the classes they want are already clos ed," he said Approximately eight per cent fewer class sections have been scheduled this fall For writing class Mt. Hood C om m unity College w ill begin screen ing students this fall who register for w ritin g classes offered by the literature and composition division New students w ill take the College Guidance and Placement Test to deter mine if they w ill be enroll ed in Basic W riting, WR 10 or Writing-Hold, WR 125. A ll o th e r s tu d e n ts wishing to re g iste r for Thesis Essay W riting. WR 120, or English Composi tion, WR 121, w ill also be enrolled in W riting Hold, WR 125, for the day and time they desire During the firs t class meeting of W riting Hold, all students w ill take a w ritin g placement test. Based on the results of this because of reduced state fun ding for com m unity c o l leges "T h is also means that money is not available to add more sections for classes that fill up e a rly ," Nicholson said "W e s till have an open door, but it is now open on a firs t come, firs t served basis." MHCC had 1,810 class sec tions last fa ll, a total of 1,673 are scheduled for this year, which amounts to a 7 6 per cent decrease. Nicholson said that more students than usual may be looking at com m unity col leges this fa ll because of t ig h t e r e n tra n c e re quirements at state umver si ties test, the students w ill be placed in the appropriate c o u rs e , T h e sis E ssa y W riting or English Com position "The college is making every e ffo rt to tr y to guarantee student success with this screening pro cess," said Alan Goodell, MHCC associate dean of in struction "T his approach is a result of recommenda lions made by our student success and retention com mittee We want to help the students avoid a w ritin g class that is too advanced for them to complete suc cessfully."
