in com m on Both diseases are c a rrie d by leafhoppers, both can cause serious dam age to tom ato plants and Ixith are d iffic u lt to control Stunted g ro w th is the first indication that c u rly top or aste r yellow s is present V iru s infected plants w ill be n o tic e a b ly s h o r te r th a n healthy plants le a v e s infected w ith the a ste r ye llo w s v iru s tu rn up rig ht, as if they were stan ding on end, and eventually c u rl up C u rly top causes plant leaves to c u rl upw ard and develop a leathery, s till condition Then the e n tire plant turns a d u ll yellow Both diseases cause the veins in infected leaves to eve n tu a lly tu rn pu rple They can also prevent fu rth e r gro w th and developm ent of fru it The o ccu rre n ce of the diseases is u n p re d icta b te r th e garden needs depends on , he weather, use of m ulches and the type of soil in the garden Most established gardens s h o u ld be w a te r e d th o ro u g h ly e ve ry fiv e to seven days w ith at least one inch of w a te r In most cases, w a te rin g w ih a garden s p rin k le r is b e tte r than w a te rin g by hand or w ith a spray nozzle on the end of a hose W atering by hand ra re ly does m ore than wet the leaves and surface of the soil When w a te rin g w ith a garden sp rin k le r, be sure to leave the s p rin k le r on long en ou gh M ost s p r in k le r s d e liv e r about one fo u rth inch of w a te r each hour G etting the proper am ount of w ater on the garden takes tim e By placing em p ty cans around the garden, you can m e a su re the a m o u n t of w a te r a s p rin k le r delivers When an inch of w a te r col lects, turn the w a te r off Another way to find ou, if enough w a te r is being ap plied to the garden is to w ait a day or so a fte r w atering, then dig a hole to see how deeply the w ater penetrated in to the soil The m oisture zone should be six to eight in ches deep If it isn 't that deep, m ore w a te rin g is need ed W atering thoroughly over
