M aria Callas (C ecilia Sophia M a ria Kalogeropoulosi was born in New York City in 1923 and raised in an atmosphere devoid of operatic tradition Her talent was inherited from her maternal grand father, Petros Dinutriadis An army officer all his life, he was known during the Balkan War as "The Singing Commander ” Fifty years later, his granddaughter would be La Divma, the prima donna assoluta, the Golden Voice of the century He died before she was born Maria’s professional life can be divided into periods, each named after its chief s u s ta in in g fig u r e : the T riv e lla period, the de Hidalgo period, the Serafin p e rio d , the M e n eg hin i period, the Visconti period, the Zeffirelli period and the di Stefano period She had a bad relationship with her mother, who was ambitious for Maria, but she clearly favored the older and prettier daughter, Jackie, so Maria Trivella was not only her first teacher, but her sur rogate mother Elvira de Hidalgo taught her dramatic expression, but the greatest treasure she gave Maria was a vast repertoire of tragic heroines Tullio Serafin provided her with all the opportunities to master the bel canto reper tory on stage He was her mentor, guide and inspira tion “ Bel canto,” beautiful singing, is a term used to describe whatever method is c u rr e n tly c la im e d as teaching the art of Italian classical singing Today it usually categorizes Italian opera of lHio-50. She married Giovanni Bat tista Meneghini in 1947 He was 30 years her senior, but he was attentive and a born manager Ixive played no role at this tim e ; her daydreams were of first nights, singing feats and operatic triumphs She longed for the ‘‘lean and hungry look” that was necessary to bring greater expression and dramatic ap peal to her operatic roles Between 1952-54 she lost 62 pounds In every sense the u g ly d u c k lin g was transformed into a luminous swan. She had distinctive trium phs in Norma,” Traviata” and “ Tosca.” From 1952 to 1964 she recorded principal roles in 22 different operas, including four she never sang on sta ge : “ B o he m e,” ’ ( a rm e n ,” “ Manon Lescaut’ and “ Pagliacci.” On stage she sang different roles in more than 500 per formances Her total was 535 Fp to 1957, Maria had re nounced every aspect of her life that did not contribute to her work, but from then on she d e te rm in e d th a t Maria the Woman—would come first Her absorption into Elsa Maxwell's circle was painful for her adoring ( allasites to accept.
