IO SANDV (O r* ) POST Thurt May 7 1981 (Sm 1) G lovem en pum m el Estacada Sandy remained alive in the chase for a Timber Valley League baseball playoff berth with a 140 shutout of Estacada last week The win boosted the Pioneer record to 5-7 Sandy has games remaining with Oregon City and Silverton, and a non leaguer with Barlow The Pioneers must win both contests to have a chance to pull into a tie for fourth place and a playoff tx-rlh "We had to w in three going into the (Estacadai game," Sandy coach Curtis Heath said " M a th e m a tic a lly , we re still alive, still in the playoff shot ” The Pioneers certainly looked like a playoff team against the Rangers Sandy broke open a scoreless game m the third with four big runs and kept the pressure on from there The Pioneers got three more in the fourth and exploded for seven runs in the fifth to make the game a laugher Mike Lund started the third inning rally when he was hit by a pitch Dave Kirkland pinch ran and went to second when Matt Falgout worked a base on balls A sacrifice advanced the run ners and they both scored on Mitch Paola's single Mo Contreras then doubled to score Paola In the fourth, Randy Mar tin doubled to left center and scored on Falgout s single Mike Contreras singled in Falgout The ro o f fe ll in on Estacada in the fifth and the Pioneers gave a good shove to make sure of it They used walks, a hit batsmen, and base hits by Mike Contreras, Paola, Kirkland and Keith Powell to push seven runs across “ We made th ing s happen," Heath said "We hit and ran, pulled a squeeze bunt and did a menagerie of things out there." Meanwhile, John Martin was stifling the Ranger bats The Sandy senior went the distance and gave up just two hits Martin fanned 10 Ranger batters "Coach John Rohr and I were pleased with the way the kids handled themselves out there. Heath said "We knew there was some tension out there because we had to win it John Martin did a good job on the mound keep ing Estacada on toe " The Pioneers got in a non league doubleheader Satur day with Centennial and wound up losing both games The Eagles won the first 10-4, then walloped Sandy 16-3 in the second game The first game was close, in fact, Sandy led 3-2 going into the third But the of ficiating was also close and some calls went against the Pioneers That may have upset Sandy, because the Pioneers seemed to lose a lit tle concentration Paola slugged a bases- loaded triple in the game to provide most of Sandy's firepower The nightcap belonged to Centennial Heath saved his pitching aces for this week's league games and did a little experimenting Paola work ed three innings on the mound, his first stint of the year, and pitched w ell enough to rate a second glance during summer ball The Pioneers lacked much offensive punch except that of Mike Contreras, who blasted a solo home run in the seventh Sandy was to have played Wednesday at Oregon City (results not available at press time» and will travel to Barlow Thursday for the non-counter A Sandy win against second place Oregon City would set up a big game Friday The Pioneers host Silverton, another team in the race for fourth place SUHS second in frosh track meet Sandy High's freshmen track team took second place last week in a five- team boys meet Oregon City won with 93*.. points, followed by Sandy, 67; M c M in n v ille , 53*-.>; Tigard, 46; and Estacada, 21. The Pioneers' Steve Pet- tingill was a double winner, taking the shot with a 37-10 put and the discus with a throw of 119-7*2 He won the discus by more than 25 feet Sam Romey won the 1,500 meter run for Sandy in a school record frosh time of 4:20.5. He also took the B(M) meters with a season best of 2:09.4. meters with a time of 55 1 Rod Edwards placed third for Sandy in the pole vault His best mark was 8-6 Sandy was third in the 1.600 meter relay in 3 :58 8. "That's the first sweep we've had in the sprints since I've been here,” beam ed Sandy coach Handy Hut chinson, “ and we did it in the boys and girls,” Freshman Ryan Coombs won the 100 for the Pioneers with a 12 1 time, followed by Hob Edwards and Kevin Uiyng, both clocked in 12 2 Sandy also got a win in the 200 as Scott Skipper sped through the half lap event in 24 6 Steve Brader took a pair of wins in the hurdles and pick ed up valuable points for the Pioneers He won the highs in 18 0, then came back to win the intermediate hurdles in 43 4 The Pioneers scored well in the field events Locke Christman used a personal best to win the discus with a 134 6 toss Sandy swept the event as Mike Marleau threw 130 10 and Steve Pet tingill had a PH of 127 5 Skipper won the javelin at 183 8 and took second in the shot put with a 46-5'a throw Teammate Dale Rasmussen was a close third with a per sonal best toss of 46 3 Bob Nippert won the high jump for Sandy at 6 0 and Edwards took the long jump at ISM) Don Bennett was third in the latter event with a leap of 18 5 Nippert also took second in the triple jump with a 3»o Chris Crab- tree was second for Sandy in the pole vault at 10-6 Sweet Home won all the distance events, but Sandy turned in some good times Sieve Metelak was second in the 800 in 2 06 2, Sam Homey was third in the 1,500 meters in a freshmen record time nt 4 21 4 and second in the 3.000 with a 9 43 6 time, also a freshm en record B rian Reick was third in the event at 10 09 A sprint sweep also paced the girls win Sandra Peter son Uni the way in the too with a 13 8 time, followed by Crystal Calkins, 13 9, and G retchen M a rte r, 14 2 T’eterson also took second in the 200 with a 28 8 time and Darby Binder was third in 29.3 Sandy also scored a rare sweep in the high hurdles as Ixiri Shelton, Kecia Harris and Jacqui Pullen claimed the top three places Shelton won with an 18 6 time In the 800, it was Sandy's Laura Stnngham in first with a 2:29.3. Donna Nelson won the 1,500 for Sandy in 5:04.8 and Renee Hess took the 3,000 m 11:34.2 Gayle Roth won the in termediate hurdles in 49 7 and took the 400 meters in 102 1 In the field events, Paige Daugherty took the shot with a 34-1 put and was second in the discus. 106 9 Stephanie Hagstrom won the javelin at 124-1 and was third in the C la s s ifie d s ? shot at 31-74.
