Fifth grade students nam ed to the honor roll included Leslie Barker, Trisha Burri, Bill Cate, Michael Ford, Kristy Kruger, Colette Lin ton, Suzanne McKenzie. Pix ie Meier and Trixie Meier. Other fifth graders named included Chris Moody. Ricky Nakvasil, Blair O'Halloran, Barry Pack, Craig Reasor, Stuart Richey. Mechanical Bull Some 130 local grade school children with handicapping condi tions get a helping hand Thursday with presentation of wooden-puzzle learning boards for a new "to y” library at Kelso School The learning aids are a labor of love by former Sandy mayor Mel Haneberg and his Sandy Kiwanis Club Haneberg spent approximately 200 hours at his home garage workbench crafting the wooden puz zle boards, with help in planning from Kiwanis club major emphasis chairman Howard Berger. The slates challenged children with handicapping conditions to match sim ilar shapes, match colors with corresponding word designa tions, m atching numbers with numerals and identify letters by shapes The 130 local students with han dicapping conditions in grades one through eight fa ll into several groups Some lack eye ear hand coor dination, while others have visual motor perception at a skill level defi cient for a comfortable first-grade setting Others upon entering school lack directionality the ability to track left to right, as needed in reading The 22 puzzle boards crafted by Women’s Elimination Wed. nights! ------ 0------ Men’s Elimination Thurs. nights! the Kiwanis club should be helpful, according to special education direc tor Ralph Branson, since the hoards match two columns — left to right. A recent review of district pro blem areas revealed that 64) percent of local handicapping conditions are learning disabilites and that the big gest need for special help exists at Kelso School. Consequently, the donated puzzle boards will be housed in a check out toy library in Kelso's Resource Room.
