Section SANDY, OREGON THURSDAY, APRIL 16, 1981 and Recreat ion Coleman blast paces Sandy to 13-5 win Class of 1971-72 defends alumni title ne Class Of 1971-72 successfully defended its championship in the se cond annual Sandy High School Alum ni Basketball Tournament, beating the 1977 team by a 77-61 score. It was the second straight win for 1971-72, which has dominated both years Sandy has hosted the tourna- m®n ^ u’° players, Kick Zimm erman and Kay Perkins, were named to the All-Star team and Zimm erman was nam ed the to u r n a m e n t’ s m ost valuable player. Other first-team ers were Jack Paola 0977), Tim Veley (1976) and Kick M ar tin (1980). The second team of the All-Stars was comprised of Mick Hoffman (1961-66) Kon Verdoorn (1967-68), J. Gynther (1973), Kandy Bryant (1973) and Mike Gynther (1979). Randy Keller was voted Most In spirational Player. In the championship game, the team broke open a close game jn tbe second quarter, outscoring the 77 squad 25-15 in the second quarter to take a commanding lead. The teams played even in the second half and it was a second straight trophy for 1971-72. J Dean Dickinson led the champs with 22 points, while Zimm erman added 21 and a game-high 13 rebounds. Jack Paola scored 27 in a losing effort. 1 hird place in the tournament went to the 1976 team. The squad from 1980 was fourth and the 1978 team won the consolation title. Several new records were set this year. The team of 1980 exploded for 102 points in one game, erasing the old m ark of 96 Kon Verdoorn scored 36 in one game, erasing Alan N ippe rt’s mark of 34. Dahlager and Leathers singled, then (’indy Coleman walloped a tape- measure home run that might still be rolling It was Coleman's first home run of the year, and the three run blast gave the Pioneers a 9-0 lead.
