The Sandy High chess club
placed second last week in
the Tim ber Valley League
d istrict match.
Oregon City won w ith a
2-0-1 record, followed by San
dy, 2-1; Estacada. 1-2; and
Silverton, 0-2-1.
W ith the second place
finish, the Pioneers qualified
for the state tournament,
scheduled for Feb. 27-2H in
Grants Pass
The Pioneers were led by
Tim Zimmerman, who mov
ed up to second board and
captured a first-place trophy
at that position w ith a
spotless 3-0 record.

first two boards.
But things did a complete
turnaround at district. San
dy won the first two boards,
but lost the last three.
Oregon City snuck away
with a 22-19 win and the
district title
game. He just crushed the
Oregon City man I know
that sounds funny in chess,
but he really did crush him
He won in less than 15 moves
and he was going against an
undefeated opponent.
Bryon Gehring of Silverton
won first board w ith a 3-0
record Third board went to
.John Schrock of Oregon City
w ith a 2-0-1 m ark; fourth
board went to Matt Perrott
of Silverton, 2-1; and fifth
board honors were captured
by Curt Landers of Estacada
with a 3-0 m ark.
