Clackamas Bank 88 The loggers maintained a share of the " A " Division lead by outlasting Clackamas County Bank in an offensive shootout. Dean Dickinson and Mike Gynther each pumped in 23 points for Schoppert’s, but high scoring honors went to Jeff Hetrick of Clackamas County Bank w ith 36. Rob Daniels had 23 for Clackamas Bank, which fell to 0-4. Schoppert’s is 3-6. % by M ARK FLOYI) Spurts Editor Funny Farm 86,1)e,i Barn 74 A fte r a disastrous fa ll season, i t ’s refreshing to see a successful boys sports program at Sandy HighSchool. ’The Pioneer wrestlers are making waves around the state. Already, they have finished ahead of state champ Barlow in a tournament and beaten other state placers from a year ago. Sandy has a 3-1 league record and the Timber Valley League is widely regarded as one ot the toughest, if not the toughest, conference in the state. The other might be the Metro League, and Sandy topped defending Metro champ Aloha 35-30 this past Saturday. How good are coach Ron Calhoun’s Pioneers? As a dual meet team. Sandy is pretty good As a big tournament team, the Pioneers are excellent. Translated. Sandy has a number of excellent individuals who can take on most anyone in the state. But it has a few weak weight classes where opponents can score big in dual meets. In bigger tournaments, however, those points are usually divided among several opposing wrestlers. Sandy has had its ups and downs this year, but it looks like the Pioneers are finally starting to je ll There are two reasons for the improvement — first, the return to the lineup of Dan M artin and, second, the switch of Mike Rohweder from 115 to 106. M artin was undefeated when he was struck down by a shoulder in ju ry and missed a month. He just returned to the lineup and took the 157-pound division at the Hood River tournament. Rohweder was surprisingly tough at 106 last year as a freshman. But he had been getting hammered this season at 115. He decided to cut down and had no trouble making weight. He is also undefeated since making the cut. If Rohweder can continue strong at 106, Sandy is going to be tough to beat. Larry Topliff is 10-3 at 98 pounds and the Pioneers have a potent one-two punch at the start of every match. From 115 to 130. Sandy is vulnerable. But all of those wrestlers are capable of coming throughewith a win. especially Robert Paul at 123 * The Pioneers' strength, though, begins at 136 It's a m urderers' row. Scott Quick is a senior who is starting to come on at 136 He owns an 11-4 m ark and is in every match. Another senior, Mike Russell, is 19-2 at 141 and a winner at the Pacific Tournament in preseason, one of the best meets in the Northwest prior to the state tournament. Chris Jones is 18-2 and owns a win over the defending 148-pound state champ. M artin is up to 12-1, his only loss coming at the hands of an Estacada w restler. Russell, Jones and M artin should all be in the district finals if things go well for Sandy, and all could place on the state level. Topliff and Quick could also do well, and Rohweder may find new life at 106. Another hope at district is Tim Svtsma. who has moved into the heavyweight position to take over for Allan F ry, out for the season with an injury Svtsma has a 15-6 record, but that should get better when he moves back to 191, his natural weight. The best thing about the Pioneers is that, no m atter how good things are this year, they should be even better next season Russell and Quick are seniors, but everyone else w ill be back. M artin, Jones and Sytsma are juniors; Rohweder and Topliff are sophs A number of other underclassmen are on the verge of breaking through and being studs, including Scott Skipper at 178, Paul at 123 and Mo Contreres on the JV team (136). All are sophomores A few juniors and other good crop of freshmen should give Sandy its best team ever next season But first there’s this year’s district and state. High-scoring Jack Paola scored 30 points and teanunate Tim Veley added 16 as Funny Farm got by the I »ell Barn 'I'uesday night. The win kept Funny Farm in a firs t place tie with a 3-0 record Steve Norris had 30 points for Deli Barn, which saw its m ark slip to 0-1 Pleusant Home Mobil 95, Reliable 40 Mike Suminski and Matt Jessen combined for 48 points to personally outscore Reliable Realty and lead Pleasant Home to a 95-40 win Suminski had 28 pouits; Jessen had 20. Pleasant Home upped its record to 2-1 to remain in the “ A " league title chase. Reliable, 1-3, was led by Mike Kern with 15 points Wooden Hutch 83. Clackamas County Bank 80 Wooden Hutch avoided a m ajor upset Thursday night, holding on to nip winless Clackamas ( ounty Bank by three points It took 38 points by A1 Smallen to pull it out for Wooden Hutch, now 3-0 on the season. Greg Niska added 15 for the winners. Rick Scott scored 28 points to lead Clackamas County Bunk, 0-4 . f t - '" win over Barlow. Barlow had beaten both Reynokfc and Sandy TV escaped the “ B” Division cellar by topping the unbeaten Drones Wednesday night. Dave Raleigh had 10 points and Rick Carey nine to lead Sandy TV, 1-2 The I »rones took over sole possession of last place w ith an 0-3 record S w im m e r s Dairy Queen held on to a share of the “ B ‘ Division lead, but barely, as it got a strong challenge from Ron’s, 1-2 Rick Resnek led DQ with 14 points while John Konvicka added 11. Mike Riley had a game-high 19 points for Ron’s. D airy Queen upped its record to 3-0. Photo b\ M ark Floyd Lisa tier came up with some personal best times Thursday and helped the Sandy High girls swimming team to an 80-74 d is tric t.” Although the Sandy boys lost, Smith was greatly satisfied w ith the effort the Pioneers turned in. Barlow won 86-60, but the Pioneers were swimming with just five boys. A couple of swimmers left the team and another was dropped for disciplinary reasons. But the five boys left put on quite a show They won a ll nine events they entered and B arlow ’s only win came in the 400-freestyle relay, the last event. Sandy sim ply didn’t have anyone left to swin. The Pioneers also turned in nine personal best times. It was depth of the Bruins that won the meet for them “ We’ve got some quality kids left and I ’m very proud of these guys,’’Smith said. “ They did a heck of a job out there. They really showed me some class. They were timed in 1:52.29. Shawn Burns won the 200-freestyle with a personal best 1:59.77, then came back to win the 500-freestyle in 5:18.96. Topliff took the 200-mdividual medley in 2:18.3 and the 100-butterfly in 1:00.73. Both marks were personal bests Izer took the 50-freestyle in a speedy 23.98, and also won the 100-free in a blazing 51.09. Both of those marks were personal bests. Hazelett took the 100-breaststroke in 1:10.98, another best time. The Pioneers weren’t quite as close to Lake Oswego last week. The Laker girls ripped Sandy 102-52 and the boys claimed a 107-45 win over the Pioneers. It wasn’t that Sandy had such a bad meet — quite the contrary — i t ’s simply that Lake Oswego is a very powerful team and one of the best in the state. The Pioneer girls had a dozen per sonal bests and the boys picked up a few as well. But wins were a little harder to come by against the strong leakers Roth nabbed Sandy’s only victories for the girls, winning the 50-freestyle in 26.2 and the 100-free in 58.2. Izer was Sandy’s only winner in the boys competition, winning the 100-free in 52.5. The next meet for the Pioneers w ill be this Thursday, Jan. 29 against Tigard and Lakeridge. Tigard is another of the top teams in the state and Lakeridge is not far behind. The firs t event w ill begin at 4 p.m. Swimmers 55, P&C Construction 45 The Swimmers remained in a first place tie w ith a 3-0 record by topping 1-2 P&( Construction. The Pioneers went into the match as favorites, though not many people thought that they would win by 35 points in the varsity contest But a few key things happened in the lower weights and before Estacada knew it, Sandy was up 23-0. For one, Mike Rohweder moved from 115 to 106 for the firs t time this year What a difference a weight makes. Rohweder was a freshman sensation for the Pioneers last year, but he grew a shade too much. Or, so the coaches thought. Regard less, Rohweder found 115 a bit too heavy for his liking and decided to cut weight. Suddenly, the sophomore has found himself back on top of his game. And when Rohweder teams with 98-pound L a rry Topliff, Sandy has a very strong opening duo of sophomores T o p liff scored a pin over Jeff Goodrich in 4:42. In a near carbon copy, Rohweder pinned R.J. Irvine in 4:24. Boom. 124) for Sandy. J u n io r B ill Mathews moved from 106 to 115 and scored a 20-7 su p e rio r decision over Gregg Pinkerton. Robert Paul had it a little easier, he won by fo rfeit at 123. Estacada finally got on the board at 130 when Vince Taylor scored a 4-1 decision over Paul Gagner and the Rangers' hopes must have flickered as B illy Hash blanked Carey Larson of Sandy, 84), at 136 But the meat of the Sandy lineup was coming up and Estacada wouldn't see too many more pouits Mike Russell topped Doug Hunter 10-2 at 141, Dean Fischer scored a 7-2 win over Brian Schaffer at 148 anti Chris Jones manhandled Jeff Brown, 12-2, at 157. Sandy increased its lead to 33-7 and had the match under control. At 168, there was an upset of sorts Estacada’s Todd Stiles scored a 5-4 win over Sandy's Dan M artin, giving him his firs t loss of the year M artin was wrestling in just his second match since coming off a shoulder injury and may have been a little rusty. Sandy got the points right back as sophomore Scott Skipper scored a 10-4 win over Gordon Moore at 178 Randy Carmony scored four points in the final period to outlast Dale F ra ly 10-9 at 191.
