" A recent survey revealed that preschoolers w atch an average of 23.5 hours a week. In other words, ‘looking' takes up the equivalent of th re e a d u lt w o rk in g d a y s ,” Straatm an said. Television is influencing our children as m uch as parents and schools and fa r m ore than church. P ublic pressure has moderated the am ount of violence on TV during fa m ily view ing hours but other w o rrisom e TV habits m ust be m on itore d by parents. “ Heavy TV view ing rem oves ch ild re n fro m d ire ct re a l-life ex periences that are essential for in te lle ctu a l, social and physical d e v e lo p m e n t« ” S tra a tm a n e x plained ‘‘ In preschoolers, it in creases restlessness, decreases im a g in a tive play, lowers com prehension and in te rfe re s w ith social and com m unicative ac tiv itie s .” F o r m any, TV has become the m a jo r shaper of th e ir view of the w o rld and how they should act in th a t w orld. “ I t ’s hard to say how m uch TV is too m uch, but when it crow ds out run ning and ju m pin g outdoors, reading or being read to, hom ew ork, chores, playin g w ith others, doing things w ith the fa m ily , hobbies, or sleeping, it is too m u ch ,” S traatm an said. Although 98 percent of homes in the U.S. have T V, parents are not defenseless against its in tru sio n, S tra a tm a n added.
