✓ 4—SANDY (Ore.) POST Thur»., Aug 21, IBM (S m 2) MHCC developing patron mailing lists Ford’s better idea Henry Ford didn't have such a hot idea when he came up with the car All he did was cause more problems for the women who already had all they thought they could handle. It w as inevitable that women would would learn to drive once the car was introduced into society because men could see that the car would be of great advantage to the homemaker A women could do 10 or 15 more things in a day if she could just get around faster So men whc Sdimaic s and p ie c e s w ould never have dreamed of handing the reins over were handing the keys over to women and encouraging them to learn how the new contraption operated The unfortunate mistake that men made was to show women how to tkive the vehicle without showing them how to repay it. The fine art of tuning and maintaining was monopolized by the men so the fine ladies wouldn't have to soil they pretty hands or confuse they pretty minds Which eventually left the pretty ladies standing up to they pretty bussels in mud because they car broke down and they had absolutely no idea what to do. "Women driver" jokes erupted from the lack of knowledge women were given to cope with the problems that arose from the automobile. A desperate women stranded on a dirt road in 1910 probably sounded much the same as a woman today stalled on the freeway How many ways can you say "The car stopped and I can’t get it started again * Most men feel women can't handle the complicated mechanics of today s engines although over the years they have progressed from the simple 4-cy Under Model T to the massive diesels with 21 forward gears Boys go from Tonka trucks to Chevy trucks and by age 18 can usually take an engine apart and sometime* get it back together again Girls meanwhile are supposed to hake, sew and type. So when an unknowledgable woman brings her limping car into a garage the first thing the mechanic asks is "What s wTor*> with it?” Now if she knew she wouldn’t need his advice When she tells him that it makes a funny noise and sounds like a bird singing or tennis shoes in the dryer he gives her the look that says. "How can you drive if you don’t know any more than that about vour ca r” Thus putting the woman driver right back to square one with the keys, but no answers There are some men who don't know a lug wrench from a dip stick too. but when they go into an auto body shop a different game is played. Both men stick their heads under the hood of the car and study the ‘problem together The mechanic asks the owner what he thinks is the matter with tlw car and the male owner, even though he knows nothing about what's under the hood, offers some lame advice The mechanic knows the advice is all wet, but takes it under consideration to be polite They shake hands, the owner goes home knowing that he straightened out" the mechanic and the mechanic’s repair bill gets paid without question The horse and buggy days were considerably slower and less efficient, but the longer I ’m around the car the more appealu^ they looked The extent of my auto mechanic knowledge is checking the water, oil and gas. a deficiency my girls may correct Old Dobbin had no gauges to check, no shocks to replace, no need for Midas, no transmissions to worry about He was a tractor, a pickup truck and a car all rolled into one There was no dip stick to check on Dobbin and he seldom ran out of water because he refilled himself. The best thing about him was there was no confusion between leaded and unleaded gas because Dobbin had a gas all of his own.
