POST—3 s tiif »hets teams Return of Ali is a mistake Sandy picked up a p a ir of wins in the doubles com petition, but West I.inn posted a 5-2 team victo ry over the Pioneer boys in a Tim ber Valley league boys tennis match. by M A R K F L O Y D Sports E d ito r Som e people ju st d o n ’t know w hen to quit. To no o n e ’s re a l s u rp rise , M u h am m ed Ali c a m e out of re tire m e n t for the u m p teen th tim e a n d signed a c o n tra c t to fight WBC c h a m p L a rry H olm es. He did it in ty pical Ali style, w ith a b o isterous p re s s c o n feren ce in which he ta u n te d H olm es an d p ro cla im e d his own g re a tn e s s . Com e on, Ali. D on’t you think people a r e getting ju s t a little bit tire d of your th e a tric s? The first couple of tim e s, it w as kind of am u sin g . Then it w as to le rab le . Now it ’s dow nright boring. Ali isn ’t som e hotshot kid, h e ’s a fat, 38 year-old boxer who is going to h a v e to work his fanny off to g et in sh a p e to fight. T h at in itself should be enough of a c h o re to keep him occupied — in ste a d Ali chooses to e x e rc ise his m outh. “ I got speed an d e n d u ra n c e ; y o u ’d b e tte r in c r e a s e y o u r i n s u r a n c e ,” h e ta u n te d H o lm es, w ho j u s t r e a c h e d th e 3 0 -y ea r p late au him self. Ali th en p ro ceed ed to m ak e fun of H o lm es’ opponents, including the 254- pound L eroy Jo n e s who he called , ‘‘the big, fat g u y .” Now t h a t ’s kind of like listen in g to K arl M alden m ak e fun of J im m y D u ra n te ’s nose. If anyone h a s seen Ali late ly , th e y ’d know he looks so m eth in g like a big sn a k e th a t ju st sw a llo w e d a g o a t. O r s w a llo w e d a w a te r bed — a full one. Why does som eone like th a t, esp ecially a supposedly m a tu re m an of 38, h av e to re s o rt to n am e-callin g an d tau n tin g to m a k e his c o m e b a c k ? T h e a tric s. Ali is sim p ly try in g to build him self up — e ith e r for his ad o rin g public or to convince him self th a t he can do w hat no m an h as e v e r done — win a fou rth w orld heavyw eight crow n. The task is m o n u m e n ta l, but then so a r e the incentives. Ali is being g u a ra n te e d $8 m illion w hile the ch am p io n H olm es will receiv e $4 m illion. A $4 m illion p a y d a y isn ’t too bad, undoubtedly H o lm es’ h ig h est, but should Ali be g ettin g tw ice a s m uch a s the cham pion m a k e s? H olm es h a s n ’t been silent th ro u g h o u t the whole a ffa ir. He rem in d ed Ali th a t he h ad to lose th re e tim es to be a b le to win th e crow n th re e tim es. H olm es h a s n e v e r been b eaten. In fa c t, L a rry H olm es is a w inner outside the ring a s well. He is one of the m o st civic- m inded people in sp o rts and he is re g u la rly giving his tim e, a s well a s m oney, to th e c a u se of c h a rity . B ut w hat is re a lly nice about H o lm es’ p h ilan th ro p y is th a t he does it q u ie tly , w ith o u t c a m e r a s o r a n y o th e r fan fa re . In fa c t, h e ’s a lm o st e m b a rra s s e d by it. M uham m ad Ali will m eet L a rry H olm es Ju ly 11 in Rio de J a n e iro , w h ere m o re than 150,000 sp e c ta to rs will likely be on han d . And p erso n ally , it would be nice to se e H olm es send the ex -ch am p back into re tire m e n t. Ali had his reign. He did for boxing w hat no m an h as been ab le to do for y e a rs , rek in d le national an d in te rn atio n a l in te re s t in the sp o rt. He m a y h a v e been the g re a te s t boxer of all tim e ; no one will e v e r know. And he m ay com e back to b eat H olm es. I hope not. Ali’s tim e is p a st. He should hav e re tire d g rac e fu lly w hen he h ad the chance. But th e lu re of the lim elight an d the big d o llars w as too m uch. Ali bom bed out a s a diplom at an d a s an a c to r. If he bom bs out a g a in st H olm es, people m ay fo rg et w hat he w as in his p rim e an d re m e m b e r the failu re s. W hatever h ap p en s, though, it should be an in te restin g fight. Ali m a y be a t H olm es, who h as n ev er fought a tru ly good bo x er in his p rim e. But Ali isn ’t in his p rim e an d he m ay need ev e ry bit of th a t $8 m illion for his hospital bills.
