I* SANDY (Or«.) POST Thur, O k A. 197« (toc. T, Sites for airport eyed Local studies foreign farming Two or three Clackamas County airports will be studied in detail as possible sites for the (tort of Fort land’s third general aviation airport The specific sites will be decided early next week, explained Jay Buechler, port planner. The port’s staff has been looking at about 30 air fields in Clackamas County and is culling the list to determ ine which sites deserve further study. The staff’s recommendations will be presented Dec. 12 to the port commission. The port wants a third general aviation airport to handle growth in private aviation between now and the year 2000. “We feel the aviation system for the Portland metropolitan area needs some additional capacity between now and the year 2000,” Buechler said. The Port operates general aviation facilities at Por tland-Troutdale A irp o rt, New international program offered With the addition of five new courses and modifications to several existing courses, Mt. Hood Com m unity College w ill introduce a new academic program in international education with the beginning of winter term Jan. 2. “ Mt. Hood will be the only community college in the nation w ith a degree program in international education,*’ said T illie H a rris , program coor dinator. Mark Liepold of Boring stands outside his host family's farmhouse in Vara, Sweden. The SUHS graduate is spending a year overseas learning foreign farming methods wider the Future Farmers of America’s Work Experience Abroad program. Liepold’s learning experiences have included par ticipation in a cheese fair in nearby Skara, Sweden, different from those he has experienced in the states. “The taxes are too high for a farm er to own a truck so all the grain is hauled by tractor and tra ile r,” he said. The 1979 Sandy Union High School graduate has also had the opportunity to witness and take part in a cheese fair in Skara, a local cultural activity. Liepold said he feels he is gaining valuable knowledge through the opportunities and experiences available in the WEA program. designed to give the participant first-hand opportunities to e x p lo re and ex p erien c e a g ric u ltu re , lifesty les and traditions of a foreign country. Since September, Liepold has been living and working with the Jonsson family on their 250- acre grain and cattle farm near Vara, Sweden. Some of his experiences so far have included combining, plowing and disking. Mark Liepold of Sandy is gaining a unique insight into Swedish agriculture as he lives and works side by side with mem bers of his host family. Mark, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Liepold, 30240 S.E. Kelso Rd., Boring, is a 12-month participant in the Future F arm ers of A m erica’s Work Experience Abroad (WEA) program. WEA is an international exchange program for active and alumni FFA m em bers, Liepold has found farming practices here to be quite “ But, 17 other colleges in the northwest are planning like programs. We will serve as a model to these other schools in the development of international education,’’ Harris added. The internationalizing of the MHCC curriculum is being made possible through a special two-year grant awarded to the college by the D epartm en t of H ealth, Education and Welfare via the N ational Defense Education A ct The program will offer students three geographical areas of concen tratio n — Asian, L atin A m erican , or European studies.
