His Sandy High girls cross country team is loaded w ith talent — and most of it young Considering the depth of the Pioneers, it is i little wonder that White is optim istic. In a I recent three-way meet w ith Oregon City and Pool to offer special swim Barlow Run set Saturday i by MARK FLOYD Silverton, the Pioneers won easily placing seven runners in the top 11. As a freshman, she was d istrict champ in the 400 meters in track, fourth in the state in the 50- m eter freestyle swim m ing and a member of the gymnastics team She gave up tum bling for running this fa ll and im m ediately became Sandy’s top runner, shattering school marks set by last ye a r’s number one. Leann Madison. But you can’t make a team w ith just one athlete, especially a cross country squad. Dogging Roth’s heels ail fa ll has been another prize. Donna Nelson, Nelson's biggest problem may be that she doesn’t realize just how good she can be A problem like that can be easily overlooked considering that Nelson is only a freshman and has three more years to give opposing coaches nightmares. You won’t find two g rittie r com petitors than Roth and Nelson. They hate to get beat and would sooner die of heat stroke than let a d iffe iW ^ c a io r jersey finish ahead of them. TTiat m ay be one of the keys to the Pioneers’ success Last year's team was the firs t Sandy squad ever to reach the state tournament The Pioneers did it by finishing second in district. But this year s team has already beaten last year's best tim e by two-and-a-half seconds and the ‘79 Pioneers are nowhere close to peaking. Darby Binder was one of the surprises of last sp ring’s track season and great things were expected of her this fall. But in Sandy’s early meets, Binder didn’t exactly set the world on fire. Binder s a com petitor, however, jiB t like her teammates She knew she should be running better and as she got into shape things began falling in place. Three weeks ago she was fourth for Sandy, two weeks ago th ird and against Beaverton recently, she was second. Binder is just a sophomore. There are others Laura Stringham ran her firs t race ever for Sandy last week and finished just behind Binder. Stringham , who looks like someone’s little sister w ith a track uniform , just may be the most natural runner on the team Stringham has three more years to find out — she s also just a freshman Renee Hess is another tough com petitor and her performance at the Tim ber Valley League Invitational helped Sandy to a second place finish. Hess w ill return next year, she is just a ju nio r. The old lady on the squad is Cindy Rudisill. R udisill is the lone senior among the top seven runners and w ill miss next year when Sandy should have its best team in history. But even though the Pioneers are young, they re going to surprise a few people this year Next year there w ill be no surprises, but . w ith talent like that, it m ight not m atter. << r » « h « m i • O r « g , m « * 7 0 X > MTt 1 .1 * 0 M o n -F ri »0-9, Sat 10-8 Sun -uo> on g* 12-5 Ty r o llo ’A * PIZZA BARN O»» Hwy M . m-7178 I 9
