T h e ir 4-year-old son J a m ie
has been under intensive
care at the h o sp ita l since
A u g . 28. He is pa ra lyzed fro m
the neck down.
J a m ie was born w ith a
genetic enzym e de ficiency
called “ M o rq u io ’s Disease.”
T his e x tre m e ly ra re disease
causes d e fo rm a tio n of the
bones and a b n o rm a litie s in
the body tissues. The con­
dition ha d not been po sitive ly
diagnosed u n til th is sum m er,
even though his head began
to f a ll back and his feet
began to tu rn under.
J a m ie w ill e ve n tu a lly die
from the disease o r its
com p lica tion s. Since J u ly ,
Ja m ie has had to fig h t even
m ore d iffic u ltie s . One day he
fe ll o ff his fa v o rite toy
m o to r c y c le .
That

severely dam aged his spinal
colum n , causing pa ra lysis in
his le ft side.

su rg e ry on Aug. 28 fa ile d and
J a m ie B rin k le y has been
to ta lly pa ralyzed fro m his
neck dow n ever since.
A lth o u g h he was taken out
of the in te nsive care u n it
alm ost tw o weeks ago J a m ie
is s t ill under 24-hour care. He
m ust use a re s p ira to r and
bre a th e throu gh a tube in his
throa t.
J a m ie ’s fa m ily has been a
big p a rt of th a t 24-hour care.
H is
m o th e r and fa th e r,
S he rry and Roy, have spent
m any hours co m m u tin g fro m
th e ir hom e in Lebanon to the
h o sp ita l. S h e rry even stayed
in a m o b ile hom e in the
h o sp ita l p a rk in g lot the firs t
few c r itic a l weeks a fte r the
su rg e ry.
R oy’ s parents, Duncan and
Bea B rin k le y of B o rin g have
a lso been a lm o s t d a ily
v is ito rs . R oy’s b ro th e rs and
sisters, C a rl, Vona and Gwen
have been able to v is it Jam ie
also. A ll are gra du ates of
Sandy H ig h school, and, w ith
the exception of Vona, s till
liv e in the S andy-B oring
area.
B u t J a m ie ’s fa m ily has
decided th a t i t ’ s tim e fo r h im
to com e hom e again. T h e y’ ve
been pla n n in g since O ctober
to have J a m ie hom e in tim e
fo r C h ristm a s day. “ We’ ve
ju s t got to have h im home for
C h ris tm a s ,”
S h e rry said.
“ We
spent T ha n ksg ivin g
here and we don’t w ant to
have to do th a t again. We ju st
w a nt to be one fa m ily
a g a in .”
T h a t s im p le

again w ill be a co stly p ro je ct
fo r the fa m ily . As long as he
is in the h o sp ita l, the in ­
surance covers the costs.
Once J a m ie goes home,
ho w e ver, the B rin k le y s m ust
pa y tw e n ty percent of the
cost.
The B rin k le y s ’ share of the
cost w ill include at least
$1,300 a m on th fo r tw o
n u rs e s ’ wages plus the in itia l
cost o f the equipm ent in­
clu d in g the re s p ira to r, a
he a rt m o n ito r and a suction
m achine.
The B rin k le y s ’ share of
ju s t the nurses’ wages w ill
am ount to m ore than Roy
m akes as a jo in e rm a n at
C ham pion In te rn a tio n a l in
L e b a n o n . J a m ie is not
e lig ib le fo r social se cu rity or
the C rip p le d C h ild re n ’s fund.
“ T h e re ’s som ething wrong
w ith a system when people
who w o rk h a rd and oay th e ir
taxes c a n ’t even get some
help when they re a lly need
it . ”
Some frie n d s have taken
the in itia tiv e to collect some
m oney fo r J a m ie by setting
up donation cans in d iffe re n t
pa rts of the c ity . A fund has
also been set up through the
B r in k le y s ’
c h u rc h
in
Lebanon. D onations m ay be
sent to the “ J a m ie B rin k le y

sa id D uncan B rin k le y . “ The

B obby, 12, and sister Denise,
7, w ill also be helping out at
home.
“ T h e y ’ve learned a little
b it about w hat they can do to
h e lp ,” S h e rry said. “ And
th e y ’re ve ry excite d to have
h im h o m e .”
.J a m ie was scheduled to go
hom e Dec 16, but he caught
a cold and the fa m ily and
doctors thought it w ould be
b e tte r fo r h im to get w e ll in
the ho spita l. “ T he kids were
re a lly disappointed that he
cou ld n’t com e hom e on
S a tu rd a y ,”
