POST—9 Study maps local water supply A water supply study for the urban portions of Multnomah, Clackamas and Washington counties is being conducted by the Portland district of the US. Army Corps of Engineers. The first two rounds of the study have been completed fo llo w in g a public hearing Wednesday, it proceeded to round three The study so fa r has district ajid community, the number of suppliers in the area and where those sup pliers obtain the w ater, whether the area’s present sources w ill be adequate in the future, and what sources m ight be considered for future water needs. “ Hound one was a study of location possibilities for supplying water to different regions,” said Hay Jaren, Corps of Engineers study manager. "In round two, we narrowed down the number of those alternatives ' Jaren said the list was slimmed to 10 major alter natives that would cover the entire tri-county area. The third and final round of planning w ill be devoted to reducing the list to four or five alternatives “ We’ll be able to put more effort into detailing those plans,” Jaren said, “ the technical work on the plans should be done this fall. We should have co n tra cto rs’ reports in this fall and a draft of the overall plan ready by January.” The tri-county area now is serviced by four major water sources. The Bull Hun River serves 70 percent of the region’s population, while the Trask and T ua latin rivers serve another 5 per cent of the region in the Hillsboro and Forest Grove areas The Clackamas River serves 15 percent and g ro u n d w a te r p ro v id e s another 8 percent of the region's water supply. The W illam ette and Columbia rivers have been suggested as potential water sources for the region. Neither is directly used now, although most of the region’s groundw ater a ctua lly is Columbia and W illam ette waters filtered through sand and gravel. Small rivers such as the Little Sandy and several tributaries of the Tualatin also are being considered as future water supply sources. So far, the corps study has shown that water use in the tri-county area is leveling off frigidaire School Appliance Sale Is About Over! MAYING Motorcycle deaths at record high in 1977 reports.
