Mitchel said. The new plant is also more centrally located for the corporation’s trade area and designed for a smoother work flow than its former site in Aberdeen, Wash. The John Mitchell family operated that facility from 1955 until this year when one year of site preparation and construction culminated in the opening of the firm ’s new 20,160 square foot manufacturing plant and separate office building In Aberdeen, the offices were located in the manufacturing plant and suffered from noise and dust, according to Mrs. John (Gwen) Mitchell who serves as secretary and treasurer in the family business. John Mitchell founded the business some 20 years ago with invention of the Mitchell Automatic Release (MAR) or M ar Hook which revolutionized the logging industry to where it no longer needs to store logs in water with a man stationed in the water to unlock a group of logs. Mar Hook remains the only manufacturer in the world for log truck trailer hoists and log grapple tongs. The firm turns out some 50 booms, h ydrau lic log grapplers and log truck trailer hoists per year — an average that’s held up over the past 10 years. Sales total about $1 m illion per year. The new plant employs 27 persons for an annual payroll of approximately $350,000. All but seven employees were h ired lo ca lly and trained, which accounts for J. I). The metal mam building includes its own engineering room, tool crib, parts room and separate upstairs lunch rooms for smokers and non- smokers The plant dow nstairs contains all welding on one side of the large open room and machining on the other side Assembly and the pre assembly of trailer hoists is done on the far end of the room The corporation hopes to branch into areas outside logging — its mainstay- for supply of its equipment to handle and lif t heavy materials. M ar Hook, Inc. also manufactures jib cranes, bridge cranes and electric hoists, acting sometimes as dealer and more typically as d is trib u to r to some 20 dealers in Oregon, Washington, Alaska.
