A ) yh- - P tty ■ PAUL WALDEN Shields attends fire conference BORING - Matt Shields, Boring Fire District chief, returned Friday from the Oregon Fire Services annual conference at Baker. F ire chiefs, volunteers, directors and fire district officials met to review fire service in the state, education, the operation of fire districts and other topics of mutual concern to fire fighters. “ One of the main ideas of the conference is to let each of use see how other people operate their program s,” Shields said. The approxim ately 100 chiefs and officials at the conference got a look at the latest in equipment during demonstrations provided by equipment manufacturers. “ The demonstrations and programs had an emphasis on safety,” Shields said. The representatives from the fire districts and depart ments concluded they were in favor of having one cen tralized state. During a business meeting, the fire chiefs passed a resolution against the initiative stating that they felt that it was not designed for the way the state of Oregon operates. According to Shields, the wording on the limitation circulating via petition throughout Oregon is the same as the recently passed California measure. Shields said Oregon could run into problems because our state government operates d if ferently. “We could end up with 45 percent of what we get now to operate on,” Shields said. “ We couldn’t run very well on that.” The chiefs decided that if the initiative does make the ballot in the fall, they would have to take the time up until the election to explain to Oregon voters the problems that would be encountered from passing the limitation.
