index system brought into
use three years ago. every
house and numerous farm
buildings tn the Sandy fire
distric* is identified in an 80-
page map notebook The
notebooks are kept within
easy reach in all the fire
response units.
Each page of the book
shows the location of
buildings and driveways for
a one square mile area
The street address index

previous method of locating
houses by postal route and
box numbers, according to
Rathke The fire department
made the change in 1975
when the county assigned
street numbers to all houses,
mobile homes and other
dwellings.

listed in the map where they
should be,” Rathke said " I f
we go out on call, we want to
know for sure where it is
we re going before we get
there.”

not a failproof method of
identifying a house or other

department has always been
able to locate a fire or other
emergency no matter how
incomplete the address given
by the caller.

Jack Tanner in Tacoma.

order, which expired Mon
day, to include Oregon
growers who belong to the
farm bureau as well as
Washington Farm Bureau
growers
Caster said Tanner in
dicated that Labor Secretary
Ray M arsha ll had been
arbitrary and capricious in
denying about 200 requests
from Oregon and Washington
growers for waivers to allow
10- and 11-year-old pickers
into the fields. Marshall said
the farmers did not provide
adequate information about
the effects of pesticides on
the children.

education program at Mt
Hood Community College is
offering a number of classes
throughout the summer
designed to improve basic
s k ills in area such as
reading,
w ritin g ,
and
mathematics.
These
classes
are
scheduled for five-week
sessions and the ten-week
summer term
Students who would like to
increase their reading skills
may enroll in E ffective
Reading (RD 10) This five-
week course stresses im
proved reading rate, reading
c o m p r e h e n s io n , a n d
vocabulary building in an
individualized program.
Basic Writing Skills, <SR
10) provides students with
practical writing skills This
includes studying sentence
construction, spelling, and
grammar
Arithmetic Fundamentals
MTH 10) covers whole
n u m b e rs , f r a c t io n s ,
d e c im a ls ,
p e rc e n ts ,
measurements, and related
applications. This class has
no lecture, but meets in the
math laboratory for four
regular hours per week
arranged to fit the student's
schedule
Effective Study Skills <SSK
10) is designed to help
beginning students un
derstand
the
class
scheduling process, improve
their study habits, use the
library, and take exams
effectively.
Man in a Modern World
(HUM 10) is an introductory
overview of the arts and
social sciences fo r the
student with little or no
background
in
the
humanities
The summer sessions also
offer independent study
courses
in
g ra m m a r,
spelling, vocabulary im
provement, English as a
second
language,
and
com m unication w ith the
deaf
Some of these courses are
semi-independent
study
courses taught with tutorial
assistance and the support of
workbooks and prerecorded
tapes These classes may be
started at any time and
progress toward completion
may be as rapid as the
student desires
Other classes offered as
part of the developmental
education program are
taught during the regular
sum m er
s e s s io n s .
Registration for the first
five-week session is over
The last day to register for
the ten-week session is
friday, June 30, with classes
begimng June 19
Registration for the second
five-week session can be
copleted at any time during
regular college office hours,
with classes beginning July
24
