Jake Clarence Reynolds of Eagle Creek, pleaded not guilty Monday morning to charges of m urder, aggravated felony murder and first-degree robbery in the shooting of a patron of Irene’s Tavern in Sandy His trial is scheduled for Aug 14. Jerry L. Nored, 25, Sweet Home, has been indicted on charges of murder and first- degree robbery Nored has requested a bail hearing, delaying his arraignment. The hearing is set for June 26 The Oregon chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews reached out of the city of Portland for the first time in the history of its annual awards presentation to select Sandy’s Judy Sheppard for the "How Big is One” education award Tuesday night. The award is one of eight given to civic leaders in the Portland area for outstanding contribution to community service. Sheppard received the award for her work as coordinator of the Mt. Hood-Sandy Community School. The charges are in con nection with the shooting death of Kerm it Carney, 52, Portland, who died of a single gunshot wound shortly after two hooded men, one armed with an automatic rifle, allegedly attempted to rob Irene’s Tavern " I don’t think they could have found a more deserving person for the award,” said Margaret Gratton, director of Community Education and Services for Mt. The June 27 election w ill be the third alternative offered to voters who w ill be asked to approve a three-year rate of $5.76 per $1,000 of assessed value on taxable property, The funds generated by the levy are estimated to be $1,749,312 in fiscal year 1978- 79. The total school budget approved by the board is $2.7 m illio n . The local share comes to $1,667,853. Voters turned down a $1.4 million levy on April 4 by 531-467 margin in a light voter turnout The second electin (the May 23 prim ary) sought to erase the existing tax base set over 50 years ago. However, voters rejected the important one, according to cu rren t base of $248,000 (including 6 percent annual increases) with a new base of $1,987,853. The June 27 election is an important one, according to SUHS Superintendent ,D r. Jack Peters. If the serial rate levy is defeated, the budget may have to be trimmed. " I ’m firm ly convinced that the budget we’ve submitted is a need-to-have budget,’ ’ he said. “ It is a tight one.” "The people of Sandy have always supported the high school,” Peters continued "They know that we have to fund the school to keep it operating.” The $5.76 rate being sub mitted to voters is 54 cents higher than the 1977-78 rate, but 12 cents lower than 1976- 77 and 67 cents lower than in 1975-76. The figure is an increase of $44,000 over the amount of local taxes paid last year. Reasons for the increase include the purchase of a new school bus, a 22 percent in crease in students, inflation, and the need to fill one and one-half new teaching positions. Two candidates are run ning for director of the Bull Run School District. Jack E. Layton, Sr. and Cathleen Quiett are seeking the position which as a four-year term. The Cottrell School Board is also seeking approval of its operating levy. The amount sought ($267,359) is $52,000 more than the amount financed by local taxes last year, but the new tax rate would be slightly lower. The levy is to maintain cu rren t educational stan dards, to develop a program for problem learners and a program fo r accelerated learners, to provide main tenance fo r the physical plant and to adjust faculty and staff salaries in ac cordance w ith teacher contracts. "W e’re not part of federal subsidization. Haulglum Road, Sandy, Sunday afternoon A witness, George Belton, was logging on Webber Road 1.6 miles south of Highway 26, when he heard laughter and the sound of metal being struck through the woods Belton told Clackamas County s h e riff's deputies that two boys, who looked 15 or 16 sped off on their m otorcycles as he ap proached Deputies found the car with the rear wheels removed, the bottom badly damaged, the radio missing, and the dashboard smashed in. Belton told deputies both boys were short One, he said, wore a red helmet and rode a red motorcycle, the other wore a black and red helmet with gold trim , and rode a yellow motorcycle. MARX & CHASE Registered Land Surveyor Gresham Burglaries reported to the Clackamas County sheriff’s office in the past week: Paul Marchand, a resident of Mountain A ir Park near Wemme, reported stereo equipment and a television set stolen from his home, Marchand told deputies the thieves gained entry through a kitchen window. Total value of the stolen items was placed at $1520. The burglary occured the night of June 16. A rash of burglaries oc cured along Southeast Tillstrom Road in the Boring area the same evening. The figure, which represents 20 percent of the MHCC budget, does not provide for buildings Should the levy fail, the MHCC budget would face a substantial reduction which would lead to fewer classes, services and teachers, ac cording to Dr. R. Stephen Nicholson, president of MH CC. "Because of a reduction of classes and services, we would anticipate a loss of students attending Mt. Hood and a corresponding loss of federal financial aid dollars and purchasing activitiy in this area,” Nicholson said. If the levy is approved, last year’s tax rate of $2.20 per $1,000 evaluation w ill remain the same. In making the presentation, awards committee chairman Silvia Rea cited Sheppard’s efforts at organizing numerous programs and workshops in the Sandy area through the Community Schools. "(She) is known as The Community Schools Lady’ in Sandy," Rea said. "And her combination trailer-office- classroom has become known as the civic center of Sandy Through the Community Schools program, she has brought people of all ages and socio-economic status together to experience and share the joys of enrichment,” Rea added.
