(S*c. 1) Forest burning topic of meetings Management of smoke from slash burning and other forest burning w ill be the topic of public meetings in Portland, Eugene, Medford and Coos Bay in June The meetings are being sponsored by the Oregon Department of Forestry and the State Deoartment of Environm ental Q uality to explain the current program to manage slash burning smoke and to provide the public with an opportunity to recommend any changes in the program for the local areas. A 7:30 meeting w ill be held in Portland. June 19, in Room 602, M ultnom ah County Courthouse A ll forest burning in Oregon is controlled by the Oregon Smoke Management Plan, administered by the State D epartm ent of Forestry. The Oregon Legislature’s Joint Interim Task Force on Forest Slash U tiliz a tio n requested that the public meetings be held. Forest slash is burned under controlled conditions to remove materials from the forest that could be ex tremely fire hazardous in an uncontrolled fire , said a D epartm ent of F o re stry official Forest slash and brush is also burned to prepare land fo r reforestation. In 1977, almost 3.5 million tons of forest slash and brush were burned on 97,576 acres in Oregon That amount was down from 1976 when almost 4.5 m illion tons were burned on 113,606 acres. The 1977 decrease was due to fire hazardous conditions that made it unsafe to burn during much of the summer, the forest official added. Forest burning was also limited in 1977 during the peak field burning times of the year to avoid overloading the Willamette Valley with smoke. Because of the restrictions on burning in 1977, a backlog of unburned slash and brush has been created, the d e p a rtm e n t re p o rte d . Requests wxre made to burn 7.0 m illion tons of forest material in 1977, but only 3.5 m illion tons were able to be burned Of the 3011 burns in 1977, only 1.3 percent (40 burns» created smoke problems, according to State Depart ment of Forestry figures. Of the total, 98 7 percent did not cause smoke problems, 1.2 percent (35 burns) caused minor smoke problems in populated areas, and only about .2 percent (5 burns) caused considerable smoke in tru s io n into populated areas. W ild fish top p rio rity The Fish and W ild life Commission has adopted a policy giving wild stocks of fish “ fir s t and highest consideration“ in its management programs. The exact wording lias been change^ somewhat during the past several months The policy was adopted to put more emphasis on the management of wild stocks and to spell out the use of hatchery fish in relation to wild fish. M arlene Tebo plays Harold’s wife, Penelope, who finds herself shocked to discover that her husband is still among the living. Col.
