When visitors were due, she would sweep the floor in front of the office. When the superintendent was gone, she would conduct staff meetings. On oc casion, she would serve as a substitute teacher or help in the kitchen. And of course, there was her myriad of secretarial duties. One day, during the final months she was working for the district, she noted to then Superintendent Joe DeMarsh: "You know, I’ve don everything there is to do in this district except drive a bus." And sure enough, a few days later, transportation director Chuck Mark- well brought a bus down to the district office and Mrs Alexander had a chance to drive it back to the parking area. Mrs. Alexander is now putting the myriad of experiences she had at Sandy to work at Mt. Hood Community College, working with the Cooperative Work Experience program. Mrs. Alexander received much of her training at Sandy High School working on the job with people like former school secretary Joy Bell. "She was a tremendous instructor for me. I learned filing, typing. . . all kinds of things " She also learned about budgets, personnel selection, contract negotiations, affirmative action, job construction and job bidding. "Young people today don’t have that kind of opportunity," Mrs. Alexander reflects. "You don’t start out in a one- girl office in a school anymore." Hie central focus of the Cooperative Work Experience program at Mt. Hood Community College is to provide learning experiences not available in the classroom. It’s designed to assist students in bridging the gap between the classroom and the world via an op portunity to apply classroom theory to the practical situation. 'Die students participating receive college credit for successfully com pleting their work experience requirements, and in most cases, the students are paid for their work by the employer. Mrs. Alexander said CWE provides the employer with qualified students from which he makes the final selec tion. The employer negotiates hours and pay with the student. The student, in conjunction with the employer and the instructor-coordinator, sets specific learning objectives to be achieved during the work experience. The instructor-coordinator counsels the student and once a week conducts seminars which are related to work experience. He also visits the student and employer to discuss the student’s progress. A final evaluation of the student’s total job performance is made by the em ployer and the instructor- coordinator. The student is graded on how well he accomplishes the set work objectives. CPW programs include business management, forestry technology, automotive technology, accounting technology, graphics, journalism, insurance, legal assistant, office machine repair, and real estate. A spokesman for the college said jobs are especially needed involving art work, publicity or other writing, and ( p u b lic notices ) NOTICE TO IN T E R E S TE D PERSONS No. 74-5-7P IN THE CIRCUIT COURT OF THE STATE OF OREGON FOR THE COUNTY OF CLACKAMAS PROBATE DEPARTM ENT. Mrs. Alexander noted that the ad vantages to an employer involved in the program include the opportunity to meet part-time, immediate and long- range personnel needs while freeing up full-tim e em ployes from extra assignments or training. CWE facilitates entry-level recruiting, she added. With the try-out, the employer will better know whether he wishes to hire the person for per manent employment. Businesses wishing to participate in the program may contact the Office of Cooperative Work Experience, 667- 7311. Mrs. Alexander recalls her 28 years at Sandy High School with fond memories. "I had some really neat people to work with," she said, mentioning former superintendents Fred Martin, Ralph Peterson and Joe DeMarsh. When DeMarsh announced his plans to retire last year, she decided it was time to change jobs. But she didn’t leave the field of education. In addition, she calls on businesses in the college district, informing them of the college programs. "I’d lived in Gresham but worked in Sandy,’’ she said. "I never even had a chance to get to know the people in my home town until I got this job." TTie college also offers educational services to businesses, industries and agencies within the district. She said the college is willing to work with businesses to develop and provide special classes, seminars, workshops or staff development on a special contractual arrangement. “Mt. Hood really offers something for everybody,” Mrs. Alexander said. Proposal. This stated time may be considered by the Owner in determining the award of the Contract.
