A Lively Race For Mayor
There w ill be no shoo-in in this
year s m ayoral race, so at this
early date we re not about to
predict a winner
We w ill,
how ever, venture the opinion that it
w ill probably be one of the most
interesting races the city has seen
in years
Sandy city government, in the
past, hasn't often evoked an out
pouring of enthusiasm and interest
00 the part of area residents It s
possible that city residents were
g e n e ra lly s a tis fie d w ith the
workings of the c ity's management
and remained quiet
I t ’s also
possible that the c ity ’s recent
growth has brought to light some
city problems which have hit a
nerve w ith some who live here
At least two of this year s
candidates have entered the race
because of what they see to be
lackings in the system: one quite
possibly because of dissatifacuon
w ith the relationship between city
hall and the police departm ent the
other because of the way he per
ceives the c ity ’s policy toward
growth
Both situations would
benefit from some lively discussion
and debate during the next few
months
Starting in the summer, we think
it would be valuable for the can
didates to hold a m onthly debate in
the city council chambers on topics
such as city services, growth, the
police departm ent and possible
solutions to the c ity ’s downtown
parking problem Other topics, of
course, would also make debatable
m ate rial
We would like to see this cam
paign become issue-oriented The
candidates don't need to spend a lot
of money or inundate voters w ith
signs and buttons
That s not
needed in Sandy. What is needed to
gain our support is some strong
answers to the problems that this
city is facing. Nothing less w ill do
the job (SAL)
Too Many Elections
Secretary of State Norma Paulus
thinks we have too many elections
here in Oregon
She doesn’t mean that too many
issues are given to the voters,
rather that we have to go to the
polls too often If everything was to
be combined into one or two
elections, the turnout might be
substantially greater.
We agree with Mrs Paulus
In an area such as ours w here we
have seven school districts, three
fire districts, water districts, etc.,
i t ’s even d iffic u lt for The Post to
keep tra c k .. and that's our job
Mt. Hood Community College
had an election last month, last
week some school districts sub-
m ined th e ir budget levies Come
May 23 we ll have the prim ary
election plus tax base elections for
M t, Hood and the Hoodland F ire
Departm ent Later this sum mer,
Bonng F ire w ill seek approval of a
levy. E tc . etc., etc.
Mrs Paulus sugges* that these
many elections shall.-. be com
bined Better turnouts inevitably
would ensue, and taxpayer's
money would be saved in the end
I t ’s up to the legislature to
change election laws
Recent
legislatures have, in fact, reduced
the num ber of elections—but they
should go even further We hope
