Bryson is the first woman to hold the post in Clackamas County. She was appointed by Sheriff John Renfro. She lives with her husband, Bill, and their eight children near Damascus. She said that as commander of the reserves, she would like to increase cooperation among the county’s five units. “ I ’d like to have more uniformity rather than each of the five units going in their own direction.” Bryson firs t joined the county’s women’s reserve unit when it was formed in Sep tember 1972. Since then, the women’s reserve has been abolished and' merged with the regular reserve units, a move that Bryson supported. “ I think it has given the girls more of an opportunity,” she said. "Of course, Sheriff Renfro is more liberal than Sheriff (Joe) Shobe.” Renfro was elected sheriff last year when Shobe rebred after 20 years at the helm of the department. Bryson said she is the first woman to hold the com mander's position in the state and “ as near as we can tell, the first in the nation.” However, she believes her appointment was based on her qualifications for the position and not on new awareness brought about by the women’s movement. “ I t ’s not a male or female type position. I t ’s based on qualificabons,” she said. “ I ’m honored that Sheriff Renfro has selected me. But I ’d like to think it’s not (because of the women’s movement).” “ I believe the appointment was made on my background and dedicabon to the depart ment. T ra in in g includes com bination of classroom lectures, experience in U niversity H o s p it a l’ s E m e rg e n c y Department and other clinical areas as well as onsite and practical field training in mobile intensive care units provided by private and public ambulance companies. Part of the coursework will include advanced life support training to help the paramedics effectively utilize physician- p aram edic com m unication saving lives. The UOHSC School of Medicine is now the third medical school in the country to have an academic division or d epartm ent devoted to emergency medicine as a specialty. Poppen says his department hopes to have a deputy clerk serving in each city in the county by Jan. 1. Poppen said having deputy clerks in the cities should make it easier for people in those areas to register at the last minute. The deputies will be able to direct voters to their assigned polling place and hopefully ease the last minute election day rush at the county ♦courthouse, Poppen said. Nelda Bryson Nov. 10, 1977 (Sec. 2) SANDY (Ore.) POST - 11 Fred M eyer Coupon Sulzbach says center The Sandy Com munity Action Center is operating in top condibon, according to Chairman Pete Sulzbach. Plans have been approved for a sign by the City of Sandy Design R eview Board. Volunteers are caught up on sorting and displaying items brought to the center, he said. Twenty-seven babies and four first graders were served through the Well Baby Clinic held Oct. 13, reported Helen Sulzbach in the cen ter’s November newsletter. A total of 343 people were served by the center for clothing, food and other help, “Sheriff’s reserve work is strictly volunteer,” Bryson said. “ As a matter of fact, it costs about $700 to join. Volunteers are told this when they sign up.” Costs for weapons, uniforms, mileage and other expenses come out of the reserve officer’s pocket. Bryson graduated from the s h e riff’s law enforcem ent academy and has completed courses in self defense, first i Ladles - A Free Gift for You! aid, firearms, search and rescue and administration. Bryson’s children range from 10 to 28-years-old. Her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and R ichard King, also are members of the Clackamas Country reserves Another son in-law, Daniel Carpenter, a 1970 graduate of Sam Barlow High School, is a full-time police officer in Albany. She said her children have been helpful. “ The boys tor ment the heck out of me, but when it boils down, they have a definite respect for the work.” Bryson said she will work to increase reserve effectiveness “ As far as my management philosophy goes, I intend to completely utilize all reserve personnel, train in g and equipm ent to the highest degree possible in order to augment the mission of the sheriff.” She said she intends to upgrade the leadership training of junior officers of the reserve units and involve the unit leaders in more detailed roles they know it.” Bryson’s confidence in herself and the job she does is backed by her record with the department. She was promoted to lieutenant in 1974 when she also was named Gackamas County Reserve Deputy Sheriff of the Year In addition, Bryson was the first recipient of the Charles A. Aldrich trophy for outstanding service and was promoted to captain in 1976. She has contributed more than 9,000 hours to the sheriff’s department since she was first commissioned. e ♦ < . . . A R f
