There are few good winter feeding grounds left in this area,” Harlen Scott stated He is the District Game Biologist for the Game Commission. Scott and Charlie Hunter a Forestry Technician out of the ZigZag Ranger Station have worked together to make sure this area located on National F orest S ervice lands is protected. “ The road w ill be closed during the winter months, but will again be opened as a nature road d irin g the summer months,” stated Hunter. According to Scott, this area is a “ good” winter feeding range. “ The area is located below the 2,000 foot level; has good grass; berry vines and other feed the deer like on a slope which faces south; and the tree density is low enough to give the deer room to move around.” Hunter stated there are only a few other such areas left on Forest Service lands in the Mt. Hood area. “There are also some winter ranges on private lands, but we can not control r areas for deer. This area is located off the Marmot Road. Signs also warn people a<?ain«t going into the area. The meeting will be held Dec. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the basement of the Sandy City Hall. The purpose of the meeting, according to Forester Mike F ra z ie r,is to inform those concerned w ith the H u ckleberry A rea of the proposed timber sale to salvage the blowdown. “ There are about 115 acres of blowdown, out of about 400 acres total,“said Frazier, “ and a fte r w ritin g our En vironmental Analysis Report, we have come to the con clusion that this blowdown should be salvaged ” F ra z ie r added th at this meeting is being held as part of the Forest Service’s policy to keep people informed on ac tivities within the Huckleberry Planning Unit. Both men expressed concern over the increase in recent years in the num ber of poaching incidents in the Mt. Hood area. “This year we have seen a big increase partly due to the meat shortage,” said Scott. The gate is seen as a deterrent to poachers and it w ill definitely keep traffic out of the area during the winter which would bother the deer. Scott stated fines when caught poaching v a ry . Depending on the verdict of the judge, those caught poaching have received fines anywhere from $35 to $300. Both Scott and H u n te r agreed poaching is a problem in the Mt. Hood area and an effort to stop it is being made. And this gate may be one way to do it. .
