Thurs., Nov. 8. 1973 (Sec. 1) SANDY (Ore.) POST - 13 Bond issue fails Sandy's w ater polo team takes second in state S P LA S H ' Sandy takes second >n state in water polo. The Pioneers were edged in the state championship game by David Douglas 6 to 3 Saturday night This is the first year for competition by the Sandy High team in state high school water polo, and coach Karl Van Tagen and his sw im m ers finished w ith a 7-1 duel season record. Like the state championship game, the Scots of David Douglas tacked that lone loss on the Pioneers during the season. The state meet was held this past weekend at Portland State University. It was a double elimination tourneyment The Pioneers won three games and lost two both to the Scots. On Friday, the Pioneers beat Cottage Grove 1-0 and Sheldon 11-4 before losing to David Douglas 7-1, on Saturday. The Pioneers came back Saturday afternoon and beat Parkrose 7-4 to earn the right to meet DD for the state cham pionship. The Sandy team lost a hard- iought matcn 6-3 and came home w ith the second place trophy This is one of the highest finishes ever for a Sandy High athletic team in the history of the school, according to school officials. Besides earning team honors, three members of the Pioneer team earned all state team places A ll state honors went to Ron Hewitt, Steve Roth and Bill Anderson Hewitt and Roth were chosen as forwards while Anderson was chosen for his play as the short end goalie. 'The team did a great job in the tournament,” said Von Tagen, “ but we sure would have liked to beat DD in that final game.” Von Tagen is in his firs t year as head of the Sandy swimming program coming over from Country Yamaha David Douglas "Y e s , I m ust a d m it I especially wanted to beat my old team,” said Von Tagen The Pioneers earned the right to enter the state tour nament by battling to second in the Northern Division And of course, it was DD who beat the Sandy swimmers out for first in the division competition “ The team did have the satisfaction of beating DD the first time we played them,” said Von Tagen, “ but we just couldn’t overcome the early leads the Scots would get in the other games.” The play of Hewitt and Roth has been a strong point for the Pioneers all season, according to Von Tagen, while Anderson has improved w ith each game as goalie. “ B ill (Anderson) really came to play during the tournament games,” said Von Tagen. “ Carl Neuenfeldt also had a great tournament for us, and I felt he should have made the all state team because of his great defensive play at guard ” According to those who at tended the state finals, the Pioneers proved to be the best overall ball handling team entered The Pioneers also had more set plays than most of the other teams entered. That is what the Sandy High School water polo team did this year. Here the team displays trophies won this year. ( Post Photo) Basketball, wrestling swimming begin play The w inter sports at Sandy High School got under way this week B asketball, w re s tlin g and swimming now w ill fill the sports calendar for the next several months. This is the firs t year for the swimming program to be held in the winter months. In the past, swimming has been held every fa ll; this year the school sponsored its first water polo team this fall. Coaching swimming is Karl Von Tagen, who takes over for Jim Anstine who departed for a job overseas. Von Tagen inherits a strong team for both boys and girls The Pioneers have taken either first, second or third in both boys and girls the past two years and again appear to be a strong contender for the Coast- Valley League title. The basketball team is also in the run nin g fo r its th ird straight division title The past two seasons the Pioneers under the coaching of Jim Kitchen have taken the Valley division title, but have failed to make it to the state playoffs by one win each year. Coach Ron Calhoun w ill field another strong team for the Pioneers on the wrestling mats this season The Pioneers are expecting a large turnout for the sport this year, according to Calhoun A ll three sports are now in full practice after school every night. NOW for the water sport in Sandy and a 2nd in state is not too bad The sport began last year as a club, under the direction of coach Jim Anstine, Von Tagen replaced Anstine this year when Anstine took a job overseas. Miss Perkins was the lone g irl to compete on the varsity sport for a high school team in this area and at the state meet. The Pioneers all stars were led by Dan Turin who made fir s t team offensive q ua r terback and fir s t team defensive halfback. Turin was joined on the of fensive team by Geoff Richards guard, Steve Aubin tackle, and B ill Gregus halfback. On defense, the V a lly Division champions placed Tim Keller center, Eric Lundeen, tackle. Gary Blount end and Mike Wecker linebacker on the first unit. On the second team, Sandy’s Keith Jensen made split end on offense and defensive safety. The Pioneers received word of the honors at the fall sports dessert held at Sandy High Tuesday night. The dessert was well attended and football, cross country, water polo and girls volleyball were honored. The frosh had a 5-1 league this year, but did end on a mark and 5-2 overall, while positive note.
