Sept 13. 1 9 7 3 (Sec 1> U ty delays C h a m b e r to b a ck city co u n cil The Sandy A rea C h am ber of C om m erce Tuesday voted to back the city of Sandy in its efforts to purchase view p ark property along B lu ff Rd The C ham ber m e m b e rs voted in favor of the city's plan to purchase five acres along Bluff Kd to protect the area fro m d e v e lo p m e n t an d to preserve the view of the Sandy R iv e r valley and Mt Hood The C ham ber m em bers also stated the need for a them e design co m m itte e to w ork w ith th e c ity o f f ic ia ls on th e developm ent of the city The them e would be used to help the city c rea te an identity for any future construction and on im provem ents to present buildings This is something w hich is recom m ended in the proposed city com prehensive plan UNDER th e GREENWOOD TREE \ K K D A S IT T E R T R Y T H E C L A S S IF IE D S T H E J l NO IR IS In the Juno section a re found the oddest and least seen of the bulbous i r i s A d m itte d ly , they a re d ifficu lt to handle, but not impossible They are long lived , once established, and th riv e on being undisturbed They h ave a bulb much like the w ell known Dutch In s w ith this im p o rtan t d if ference Attached to the Juno bulb are a n um ber of very thick fleshy roots w hich must be considered an essential p art of the bulb If these a re broken off, the bulb dies As these roots a re easily broken, you can see the d if ficulty in handling and shipping Junos They p re fe r a heavy clay type soil that is very s tiff M a n y g ro w e rs w ho d e s ire Junos. buy seed of the species they desire and plant the seed where they w ant the plants p erm an en tly, so they need never be d is tu r b e d The u nu su al c h a r a c t e r is tic s a n d coloring of these In s is suf ficient re w a rd for a lot of tim e and patience Junos. as a group have ra th e r larg e leaves grow ing fro m a central stalk These leaves m ay be as w ide as two inches and give the plant the appearance of a m in ia tu re corn stalk The flowers are born in the le a f axils much like an e a r of co m It is no wonder that one of the names this group has acquired is “C o m Stalk I r is ” . The bulb of the Juno should be planted quite deep Only one species of this group is known that can su rvive the loss of the fleshy roots attach ed to the base of the bulb This is G ra e b e n a n a , a fa irly recently discovered species The species Persica has been cu ltivated for several centuries H ybrid izers have developed several hybrids between P ersica and other Juno species The best known of these is Sindpers, a hybrid between P ersica and Sind jarensis T he nam e of the h yb rid is d erived fro m the first four letters of each of its parents In s B u ch arica is the earliest of the Junos to bloom It usually has fiv e to seven flow ers on the stalk T he yellow falls fla re o u tw ard ; the crest is golden.
