TH' ' Soo<tov’ 761 6177 IN BIG DOLLAR SHOPPING CENTER YARDAGE _ LDS b re a k Tuesday the Sandy Ward oí the Church of Jesus Chnst of le t te r Day Saint* * *4*ortWi- Stake broke ground for their net* chapel in Sandy This event was a long tim e coming for the Sandy residents The chapel is to be located on the west side of Bluff Rd and construction is now underway The new chapel is expected to be ready sometime late Spring 1974. according to church of ficials Until that tim e, services will continue at the present location at the corner of Main St and Beer St in Sandy The present home is not the first for the Sandy Ward, there have been several moves since the local church began in 1967 The present membership has grown to 430 from the 200 who began the local church in 1967 on June 16 1967. the Sandv Branch of The Northwestern S tates Mission M t Hood D is tric t was s ta rte d w ith Robert PickeU as the first Branch President and Ramon W House and E lm e r B Buhler as his counselors, with Everett B Nordin as clerk There were approximately 200 members when the branch started They first met in The — Odd Fellows Hall in Sandy then they moved out to The Sandy Ridge School House until the school was needed for classroom space by the Sandy Grade School They then moved to the Odd Fellows Hall In 1966. they went to Gresham where they shared the Gresham L D S chapel with the Gresham and Rock wood wards They only stay«! there about a year They were able to use the Sandy Ridge School House again until 1969 when they moved to their present location In 1966 the local church became part of the Portland Stake and no longer part of the mission The branch presidency has had several changes in the past years Included in the list of past presidents are Ramon House, E lm er B Buhler. Gilford Tuttle Jr Keith Lloyd, and Lyal S.
