Parts of the city of Sandy — — c W th# a were without electricity for "ported The J '* about an hour and half on Aug 12 The loss of electricity was caused by lightening sinking a power pole at the corner of 1st St and Proctor Ave The Sandy Fire Department answered the call and several others that night during the storm On Aug 10, the fire depart ment was called to wash down an oil spill at Sandy Oil Com pany. On Aug 11, the local firemen responded to a minor brush fire at Rt 1 Box 343B. Wilk son Rd The fire was out on arrival of the fire equipment The fire department also answered to a call on Aug 12 for a car fire in the parking lot of KBK restaurant Minor W alter C. Taylor. AUG 16. 1973 A Special Thanks Sands can be proud of its parade Saturday From all reports, it was one ot the best parades ever put on by a small community in the state. Congratulations must go to all those who put so much work in on the preparation and running of the parade One person who deserves special •thanks' from the community for his outstanding effort on the parade is I Mi »G «J » covers ONLY an area of 85.000 acres in the Mt Hood area This is only part of the total 150.000 acres in the Mt. Hood area Planning guidelines are needed for the whole mountain area, not just certain sections. The interagency planning study now underway of the Mt. Hood region proposes to include this total area in a planning study. It will be interesting to watch and see how and if the just adopted countv „ i ™ Mr AWA (h< »«•- > • Mt •» - Hood area fits into the overall plan which is expected to be completed within three years. ¿6. *8» ft a. 44. O A n o th e r Petition Drive U nder Way Shades of 1971 . a petition drive is under way to get 26.656 signatures seeking referral of a legislative action to the voters. In 1971, it was city-county con solidation which was target of the petition drive, a drive that barely failed This time it’s legislative action annexing Clackamas and Washington counties to the Port of Portland without approval by the voters. Not very many people disagree with the Port's ambitions to broaden its tax base But a whole lot of people think they should have the right to decide at the ballot box. An inconsequential tax levy is in volved It will cost a person with a $20.000 house only $3.20 per year more in taxes But as the man said, it's not the price, it’s the principle People should have a chance to vote. If the petition drive is successful, it will be on the Nov. 1974 ballot, statewide The Port figures that about $1,000,000 per year can be generated from taxpayers in Clackamas and Washington counties. Residents of Multnomah county w ill have a difficult choice. They may get a reduction in their own Port taxes if the load is spread more widely i.e., over Clackamas and Washington counties But on the other hand, they may not be wild about legislative fiats which spread taxes without a popular vote. To the Editor The success of the Sandy Centennial and Barlow Road Days parade is attributed to many individuals who spent many hours of volunteer labor I wish to thank all the parade p a r tic ip a n ts , c lu b s , organizations, businesses and everyon e e ls e who helped contribute to the success of the parade I wish to m ake special recognition to the following for their extra effort Jerry Swails, Mrs Florence Schmitz, and Fred Punzel Also to the Boy Scout troops from the Latter Day Saints Church and the Cottrell Community Club A very special thinks goes to Mrs Mane Schwartz, Mrs Betty Hartman, Mrs Diane Pearson and Mrs Lynn Ellis whose help Saturday morning got the parade moving on time Also to the three boys who worked all night watching and helping the morning of the parade, Phil Synder, Tim Smith and Robbie Strum Like the fourth of July, another outstanding job was done by the Sandy Police force and also helping tremendously was the Clackamas County Sheriff's officers The tremendous work done by them in directing traffic during the parade and also in helping with the parade is gratefully ap preciated Thanks to Pete Carlson of Carlson Cheverolet for the use of his four vehicles in the parade Thanks to the judges who had a very tough job picking prize winners. This is the first step to be taken to give some planning guidelines and restrictions to the mountain area The plan has been in the making for over two years and many arguments both pro and con have occurred during this period.
