Stuart, co-owner of Stamm & S tu a rt In su ran ce, P o rtlan d , just com pleted a one year directorship on the AACJC board An original member of the Mt Hood board of education, Stuart served as its chairman in 1967 68 He's had an illustrious career in Oregon education c ircles including being named Oregon Education Citizen of the Year in 1966 Among other accomplishments are: past president of the Oregon School boards Association, past president of the Multnomah County School boards Association, past chairman of the David Douglas High School board, and m em ber of the N atio n al Committee of Public Schools Some 724 two-year colleges a re represented under the umbrella of the AACJC E d mund J G le a ze r, J r is president of the association Stuart is the lone director from Oregon and one of only six from the West Coast The AACJC was organized in 1920 to provide national professional leadership and direction for the then fledgling “junior college movement ” Known for many years as the American Association of Junior Colleges, the o rganization changed its nam e in 1972 r e c o g n .z in g c o m m u n it y colleges in its title Mt Hood president, D r Earl L Klapstein, is a past director of the AACJC. Today, com m unity and junior colleges enroll nearly three million students. “In many states where the com munity college movement has become highly developed, more than half of all students en tering higher education start in these local in s titu tio n s ,*’ AACJC president G leazer noted He goes on to add, “ These institutions are people's colleges, or dem ocracy's c o lle g e s , and . . th e y 'v e earned these labels by providing varied curriculums, both acad em ic and job oriented, and by keeping direct costs to students at a minimum ” ENDLY, COURTEOUS SERVICE ! He was invited to do this in his capacity as an A ir National Guard chaplain. He presently serves as chaplain of the 142nd flig h t group.
