For the B adger P a lm e r select two B adger hackles. B adger hackles are basically cream colored with a black center stripe running the length of the feather. Very light near white feathers with a jet black stripe a re c a lle d S ilv e r Badger. Golden feathers with a dark brown to black stripe are called Honey badger. A Brown hackle feather with a black center is known as Furnace. I f the Furnace hackle also has a black edge, it is called Cochy- Bondhu. A slight variation from the straight Palm er is the Palm er Bivisibie. One great bivisible is the Brown Bivisible, first made well known in the writings of R ay B erg m an . Using Two brown hackle feathers tie a palmer as before, except stop the hackle V» inch behind the eye and trim off the excess feather. Then tie in a white hackle and take three turns with it and finish off the fly with a head as before. Any Palm er pattern can become a bivisible by adding this collar of white hackle at the head of the fly. You wish to vary further? All right, let us try a tri visible. These are seldom seen, but they can be effective. As the name implies, we w ill be using three colors of hackle. First we must have a pattern. Lets take a look at a tried and true pat tern such as the Coachman. This has a peacock herl body, brown hackle, and white wings. To tie a Trivisible Coachman, we palm er an olive green feather one third the way up the shank; then piikner a brown hackle over the middle third of the shank, and complete with a white hackle palmered up to the eye. Make the head as usual and shellac the head. This is the T riv is ib le Coachm an. Im pressionism! True! But then, many more fly patterns are impressionistic than are not. In fact, all Palm er tied flies are impressionistic. Their appeal to the fish lies in their “ buggy” appearance.
