Sergeant Ackers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe B. Ackers, is a security policeman in a unit of the North American Aerospace Defense Command. He previously served at Harnstein AB, Germany. The sergeant is a 1967 graduate of Sandy Union High School. Hood Com m unity College w eren’t doing their leaping best at the Fourth Annual Frog Jump May 5. The one exception was “ Hop- A Loney” , anim ated am phibian entered by Rick Walton and Virginia Knudson, who ran away with the $25 first prize this year with leaps and bounds totalling 12 feet 5 inches. However forbidding the clouds may have been, the enthusiastic crowd of 200 students, staff and various onlookers more than com pensated for the threat of rain The spectators shouted, whooped, stomped and cheered each of the 35 croakers as they competed in the fun-filled event. Judges for the unique contest had as much fun as contestants and spectators Joe Brennan of Frank Newell Pontiac. George DeWitz of radio station KRDR. Lee Irwin, publisher of The Gresham Outlook, and Dick Swanson, MHCC counselor chased after erratic jumpers with stop watch and tape measurer to determine the winning leap. The Gresham Kiwanis Club, Ernie Beers Twelve Mile Tire, David Douglas High Scool and Reynolds High School all en tered frogs in the event, but none came close to “ Hop A-+Loney’s” record bound. E n trie s from Mt Hood President Dr. Earl Klapstein and Vice President Dr. Louis Herkenhoff didn’t perform too well in the contest. Dr. Klap stein's entry, “ E lk ’s Jumper” leapt a mere 6 feet 6 inches. “ Homer,” frog sponsored by the Mt Hood Admissions Office came in second with a leap of 9 feet 3 inches Last place honors were taken by “ Lily-Pad” , entered by Nancy Hager and Connie Mitchell, with a puddle- jum p of 2 feet 8 inches.
