Everyone ha* heard the expression. It has more meaning than most people suspect. Let's think about it. Our eyes and ears see and hear tens of thousands of words every day. In advertising alone, the average family sees or hears more than 1,500 ads a day. Most of what we see and hear is quickly forgotten. Why is this? These illustrations may help to explain. Compare the nature of these tens of thousand of words with the number and nature of the world's most widely known words. The lord's Prayer has only 56 wordsl The most important piece of writing the world has ever seen has only 297 words — The Ten Commandments! There are only 300 words in the Declaration of Independence! lincoln s immortal Gettysburg address has only 266 words! St. John *vrote, "Jesus wept." Just two words, but they stir one's feelings with understanding. By comparison, in the OPA days, a written order covering the price of a head of cabbage had almost 27,000 words! Get the point? We think you will. BATEMAN TERESINA ALVAREZ of Manila was more than a little surprised recently when her request made through the Sandy Post for a "pen pal” produced an "in person” response from tour ing Hoodlanders Claude Gudge and Jack Fahle. Burnside Ext. r Extension Firwood The November meeting "Maintaining Your Family Re cords” was very well given by Cathy Eggars and Hazel Lamb, and was rather an overwhelming lesson. It answered these questions: What kinds of records are needed for figuring income tax? Where should insurance po licies be kept? What documents are needed to collect social security? How long should can celed checks be kept? It was suggested that all members have a hand in the business of the home, so they will not only have an idea of how to manage money but keeping records may help them later to run a better home. For the hudsband -- he will know where the money goes! Some times it’s even hard for me to comprehend. Have you ever needed an im portant paper in a hurry and not known where to find it? Frus trating isn’t it? That’s why it was suggested you file papers systematically, - kept in such a way you can find them when needed. We were told what valuable papers to keep, how long to keep them and where. " to help in this project write to your Congressman and let them know how you feel. Bie "more mail we jan' bombard them with, the more apt they are to pressure the Highway Commission to^take come im-» mediate action. Give theln all the support you can. The creepy crawlers have been busy again. Forney Buch- anen had his outside cooler broken into Sunday night and several cases of beer stolen. I understand Bill Swanson’s Brightwood store was also broken into last week. It’s get ting to be a bit too much. Hope they catch whoever it is before long. I’m sure none of us keep records as we should unless shaken up a little by what can happen if we are the one out of seven checked by the government for income tax, or if there is a death, or we need a guarantee, or have a fire and need the inventory of the loss, etc. So take heed and begin getting your insurance policys, tax re turns, bank statements, em ployment records, birth c e r tificates savings bonds, auto titles, military service re cords, mortgages and contracts in order. There are many more, but maybe this will be enough to make people realize—keep ing records is important! Our Holiday Fare was quite a success about 400 people at tended. There were so many at tractive gift items for the Holi days and some very good food recipes — may I share a very special salad with you. Margaret Howard says that these outdoor mud baths, in the winter, are not what they are cracked up to be. Also it is no fun to have both legs, all the way mired up, mired inthecold dirty stuff, and no one to help you out. She found out that if you keep your toes turned up, you can get out with your shoes on, which is more than she expected. Thank goodness, there was a tree handy, so she was able to pull herself out. All this happened behind her house in a new fill she made the mistake of walking across. Who would think that it would have been that wet that deep down? My thanks to the Hood-Land Chamber of Commerce for their invitation to cover the meeting with the Highway Commission in Salem. The trip was most en joyable, even if we did receive the same old run around. But I can guarantee that they will not be allowed to forget that the mountain had descended upon them. The Chamber is going to concentrate on their fight, for the completion of the section between Alder Creek, and Zig Zag. With that goal in mind, they plan to heckle the department until they achieve results. We hope by the time you read this he will be home. He had to go in the1 day after the Hood-land Chamber went to Salem to meet with the High way Commission. Not that that had anything to do with it, but he was most uncomfortable all that day. Get well soon, Alan. People have been having a bit of trouble with things in their way of travel. Paula and Jim Spray, were coming home from town, last week, in their brand new Datsun, when a deer ran into them, at least they met each other just above Alder Creek. No one was injured, but Paula says it is the first time an officer ever showed up on the scene just when you needed him the most. Officer Watts was in the second car behind them and brought them home. Jim says he is going to buy Paula a tank, and I haven’t figured that out, because Jim was driving. No doubt he meant that he would put her in a tank to protect her from other people’s driving. It is a beastly way to break in a new car. Pat Matheson, in her Toyota, had a meeting with a big truck in Portland and lost that battle. She was battered and bruised, and mighty stiff for a few days, but mostly hurt in her pride. It was her first wreck in all the years she has driven, and THANKSGIVING HOLIDAYS Sandy Elemtary School Nov. 25-27 • • ■ MONDAY-Nov. 25 TUESDAY LÀNDBA'NK I THURSDAY and FRIDAY Vegetable - Beef Stew Crisp Celery Cinnamon Toast Milk Gresham Nov. 2 2 - 2 3 - 2 4 Hamburgers on Bun Relish-Catsup-Mustard Ovenly Fries Lettuce Wedge Fruit Jello Milk Buckaroo Beans Tossed Green Salad Buttered Dinner Rolls Raisins - Milk |L |/1 llV I DO W N * years PAYMENT « * TO PAY HOURS Listen to, KRDR 1230 For More Bargains 9 A.M.
