M a rtin and W illia m s; Douglass S inclair (3) and W ilco x, W - M a r tin 2 -0 L - Douglass 0 -1 By LILLIAN TEN EYCK Recently, L ib ra ria n , Eunice B arnum , called my attention to the book/ Oregon Poets, edited bu the House of Henry H a r r i son Poetry Publishers, Sixth A ve. N .Y . She said I would find some contributions from Sandy Poets. So I wasn’ t surprised when I read five very charming poems by Em m a Bennett M ille r but in Sandy we always called her M rs . JJ d . M ille r . When I f ir s t knew h er, she and her husbaid lived on a farm in Sandy Ridge. A s is te r-in -la w , Ivy V a re tti, boarded w ith them w hile she was teaching the Sandy Ridge School. So we saw the M ille rs often. I think M rs . M ille r was rather lonely on the farm as before they the farm they lived in town. I believe M r . M ille r had been a teacher. However she beautifully overcame her loneliness at least outwardly but in one of her lovely poems. Illu sio n s, I think she expressed some of her feelings. Another poem, The Empty Room, may have re ferred to her only son who was killed in eastern Oregon in a clash betw een the cattlem en and sheep m en. A lovely poem Is Spring W aking, a description of what she fe lt when springtim e came. M rs . M ille r , also wrote news for the local papers as well as for Portland papers. I rem em ber her saying, " I am so c ra zy to w rite but Just haven't the tim e to do as much as I would lik e ." I heard she was working on a rather long epic. I don’ t know whether she e v e r finished It or not. Another contributor to " O r e - gon Po ets" Is M ira Ann H orn e c k e r. M rs . Hornecker, whose maiden name was Flynn, was an indomlnable lady whose In terests w ere extensive. She was a friend to anyone In need until she became bedfast a number of years before her death. In the book she has three rather long poems. M rs . Hornecker’ s parents, and other relatives are burled in the long neglected C h e rry v ille C e m etery. It seems sad t h it many of these old burial places are allowed to become desolated and overgrown with weeds and brush and so It seems to the Mountain Grange. T h e ir project this year is to resto re this one p a rtic u la r b u ria l place. The new road has bypassed it so a new one w ill have to be built and In the ce m e tery , Its e lf, tons of the blue flowered m y rtle w ill have to be removed by hand, as no powers tools can be used until some o rd er Is resto red. At the May meeting of the Mountain Grange held In the old Brightwood School House, G ran t DeShazer gave an e x cellent ta lk on the plans fo r this p ro je c t When I lived in C h e rry v ille , we had several m em o rial s e r vices in tills old cem etery. A vivid m em o ry, too, In the In dignation of the neighborhood when the farm adjoining the cem etery was sold and the new owner found throtgh a survey that p a rt of tils land was In the cem etery. Despite the pleas and offers of money from the re la tives of those burled on his p ro perty, he Insisted that the graves be removed. A number of old fam lles a re represented in the cem etery, W are s, O d ells, Shanks, and F r le ls , to name but a few but It Is thought there Is a record of the graves in Oregon C ity . This project w ill be expensive so any contribute w ill be w el come In money as w ell as In lab o r. HEAVY W OOL S K I-T Y P E sweaters should be washed by hand in lukewarm w ater, with a m ild soap. Squeeze water through the fa b ric . Rinse in w ater of the same tem perature. Bulky knits soak up lots of w ater. To speed drying after hand washing, put the sweater In the w asher, add a bath towel to balance the load, then set the dial on " s p in " . Let the machine run fo r one minute. Remove the garm ent, d ry on a flat surface after patting It back to its origin al size. • • • Jim M a rtin pitching for th e ' fir s t tim e in over a month, stopped Scappoose without a hit Thursday anl hurled an 4-1 rtctory tor the Sandy Glants( 15-16 year olds.) M a rtin , making his f ir s t s ta rt since A p ril 24th, struck out 16 and walked four, he perm itted only two base-runners after the second Inning. The only run off M a rtin was unearned as, with two out In the sixth Inning, BUI D a ile y walked a id scored when rig h t- fie ld e r Steve Truesdale muffed an easy chance on a fly -b a ll off the bat of L a rr y F u lle r, fo r a two-base e r r o r . M a rtin was supported by a seven-hit attack w ith M ike Hite and M artin getting two apiece. The Pioneers picked up a s in gle run in the second inning on M a rtin ’ s single, and la te r on Roger W illia m s ' slngle-an In field out. Sandy then scored four big runs in the fourth to jump Into a 5 -0 lead as Leon Verdoorn was safe on an e r r o r , M a r tin grounded out and Verdoorn moved up to seconl. H ite then singled, scoring Verdoorn, W il liam s was safe on an e r r o r , and an out la te r R ob(Btrd)Blg- nall singled to d rlv e ln tw o m o re runs. Three more Sandy runs w ere pushed across in the fifth as Verdoorn w alked, M artin sin gled, and both moved up on a wild pitch. Hite drove them both home with a singel, then scored on Truesdale’ s ground out Scappoose 000 001 0-104 Sandy 010 430 X -8 7 0 Y o st, Dudley (5) and Jepson, M a rtin and W illia m s , « - M a r tin L -Y o s t. • • • Transit Dollar« Alm ost 410 billio n w ill be spent in the next 10 years to build or modernize urban rapid tra n s it systems.
