Negroes soiuelim es a ie victim s of e x trem ely poor advice. W e th in k a case in point is th e recent hassle over alleged racism in th e U niversity of W ashington a th le tic d epartm ent. A group of Negro a th le te s met w ith U niversity Pres. C harles O degaard and F ootball Coach A thletic D irector Jim Dwens and presented a list of "dem ands." One was for dism issal of a team tra in e r. T he dissension a t W ashington seem s to have been stirre d by th e sam e Negro m ilitan t who was so ac tive in prom oting th e "boycott" by N egroes of th e U S. Olym pic team . Lyndon B. Johnson is ru n n in g th e show as fa r as U.S. involvem ent in Viet-Nam is con cerned. Very obviously, he intends to pursue his present " h a rd line" ever h a rd e r in the m onths ahead. But just as obviously, Lyndon B. Jo h n so n is out of to u ch —badly out of touch— with his fellow countrym en. C olum nist Max L ern er expresed it th is way last week in th e Los Angeles Tim es: "U nquestionably th ere is a tidal wave of feeling against th e w ar ro ll ing over th e nation. Our last Legislature created an agency for the control of air and water pol lution. Industry and individuals have been asked to comply with rules and regulations to clean up our rivers and our air. To do this, m illions of dollars will be spent. Why throw all this away because one group of peo ple can’ t see any farther than today? I live on Sunnyside Road in Clackamas County, and am in the ML Scott Water D istrict who in turn purchases our water from the Clackamas Water D istrict who in turn draws water that we all drink, from the Clackamas River. Therefore, I contend thatevery- one in Clackamas County should be concerned about all rivers in our county and should have a voice in their control and use. No one group should have the right to destroy or weaken zoning of these rivers. Each year our population grows rapidly and with this out water supply will d ecrea se. Now is the time to protect it. If we are thinking towards the future, we don’t want to be in a position like many people on the East coast, where sew age is discharged into a river and 500 feet below, water 1s drawn off, run through a strainer and used for human consumption. Surely we should learn som e thing from mistakes made by others.
