(P ost photo) ST/l]-£ G A M E C O M M IS S IO N Phll Schneider, state game director, today Issued an order stopping all use of the rope collars used in the eight-year trapping and tagging study of Oregon deer herds. Schneider made this announcement fo l lowing a repoft by a California deer hunter that a large four- point buck he killed during a special season held on the In terstate winter range tn Nov ember was In d istress because of the rope band around Its neck. The animal had been trapped and marked tn Oregon by the Game Commission the previous winter. The director advised citizens that an Intensive search will be made this winter on the In terstate deer winter range to see If other animals might be tn discomfort becuase of the collar. The search will be made Jointly by Oregon and California biologists using both ground and air search methods. If any animal Is found in d istress, It will be immobilized by drug inoculation and the collar r e moved. A search will be made this winter on other ranges In Oregon where the trapping and tagging operations have been in operation, Schneider said. John McKean, chief of game operations whoheads this state wide program, reported that of Turkey Roasting Tim etable the thousands of deer trapped and tagged In the past eight years, only a few instances have been reported of any d istress among the marked animals. He thought that In the case of the buck deer killed by the Cal ifornia hunter, the slip knot In the collar failed to function when the animal’s neck swelled during the rut. A second r e ported Instance was that of a small deer which had somehow caught Its front leg In the c o l lar. McKean was confident that such accidents are rare, but where injury or suffering might be Involved, the techniques used would be modi fied or eliminated. He said that in any game management operations where animals are ; handled, marked, tagged, or scrutinized for parasites and d iseases, an occasional a c cident Is bound to occur, inspite of all precautionary measures taken. So far, he said, accidents which have occurred have happened to the trappers rather than the trapped. The primary purpose of the trapping and tagging program, McKean said, is to determine accurately the boundaries of winter and summer ranges used by Individual deer herds, their migration routes, habits, food I preferences, and other life h is- • tory information. The informat- To determine how long to cook your turkey, use the chart below It gives the approximate time re quired to roast completely thawed or fresh stuffed birds. The Cats host the Hillsboro Eagles Jan. 5. tlon found thus far has proved Invaluable to the management of Oregon’s deer herds and has benefited hunters as well as all citizens interested In the welfare of this valuable r e source. McKean noted that wide spread observations have been made of belled and collared deer by hunters, loggers, cam pers, and others during the eight years the program has been in operation. Many tagged animals have been killed during the hunt ing seasons. Biologists of the Commission constantly search for and record animals through the year. Numerous tagged animals are retrapped on the winter ranges, some two and three winters In a row, follow ing the first installation of the bell or collar. Almost all of the western states have sim ilar programs in operation, according to Mc Kean, and information cover ing tagging results, procedures, and techniques are constantly interchanged to provide the most efficient and safe opera tions possible. No reports of undue d istress have been r e ceived from these people. “ The ladder at life is full of splinters, but they always prick the hardest when we’re sliding down.” — William L. Brownell. Pattlllo, Acting District Director, of the Im migration aril Naturalization Service advised today that the annual alien address report program Is again under way. According to Pattlllo, 22,750 aliens reported their addresses last year in the State at O re gon. The number this year Is expected to tie slightly larger.
