SALSER President MT HOOD REDI MIX • READY MIXED CONCRETE • CRUSHED ROCK • SAND AND GRAVEL EDUCATION CENTER This is the era of “Human Rights.” But not al) is right with this era! When We, the people of the United States, proclaimed our desire to “secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity," we should have pointed out, per haps, that liberty is not license; that freedom is not an absence of all restraint; that the human rights we cherish entail homologous responsibilities. There are dozens of new nations in the world today, nations that the United States literally financed into existence. Unfortunately, most of these new nations have looked upon their independence as a prerogative to lean, rather than learn, and demand frem others, rather than do for themselves. They are long on rights, but short on reason; heavily in debt, but fierce in their denial of any obligation. Still, the problem of human rights pertains within our borders, as well as without. Our own Constitution is only paper, if it is to be read and revered—but not obeyed. Either provisions of the Constitution should be enforced—or the Constitution should be amended. Breaking or ignoring the law—in short, scorning that document which we consider to be our most sacred heritage—merely weakens our respect for government and lowers us in the estimation of other nations. However, the rights of a minority (so carefully delineated in the U. S. Constitu tion) do not—and should not—include the right to tyrannize the majority.
