Page 2 Sandy Post, Sandy, Oregon $2 Annual Subscription August 29, 196.3 Sparks Likely at Highway Hearings It’s becoming all too evident that any routing of Interstate Highway 205 over the Marquam bridge and the Mt. Hood Freeway is, figuratively speaking, going to be over the dead body of Clackamas county. Resolutions have been pouring out in profusion, all of them supporting a new Willamette river bridge and Interstate 205 in Clackamas county. The Marquam routing would keep In terstate 205 on the Baldock Freeway until it hits the Marquam-Mt. Hood Freeway intersection. Then it would travel easT over the freeway to 111th and north to the Columbia river and Washington state. This route has the strong support of the Gresham area since it would mean federal help on that portion of the Mt. Hood Freeway from the Willamette to 111th. Translated to practical terms, this means we’ll get the freeway about 8-10 years sooner. It’s understandable that Clackamas county wants the Interstate route because it would guarantee a new bridge across the Willamette. But we don't understand why the Hoodland and Sandy Chambers of Commerce are supporting the more southerly crossing. Completion of the Mt. Hood Freeway is as much to the advantage of the Sandy- Hoodland area as to Gresham, maybe even more. It seems to us that our neigh bors to the east may have been sold a bill of goods by the Clackamas County Associated Chambers of Commerce. We’re not going to get the Marquam route if we can’t agree right here in our own back yard. Richard E. McQueen, science teacher at Sandy high school, is participating in a special 10- week training course in Oak Ridge, Tenn. McQueen is one of 33 spe cially selected teachers from schools in 20 states and Mon tevideo, Uruguay, enrolled in the 15th session of the Oak Ridge Science Lecture Dem onstration Porgram, which is administered by the University Relations Divison of the Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Stud ies. During his stay in Oak Ridge, McQueen and his col leagues attend classroom lec tures and seminars on science and teaching techniques, carry out laboratory assignments, and constuct many pieces of demonstration appartus to be used in science classes when they return to their sponsoring institution this fall. Sometimes just a simple rearrangement will make life easier for everyone. A good way to start is to take an objective look at some of the situations which end in trouble. It dam ages wool and doesn’t help. • ALWAYS ON CALL Before you wash a wool sweater, lay it flat on a bath towel and outline the shape with a basting thread or pins. Wool sweaters should be soaked in luke warm water and mild soap. Don’t rub, but gently squeeze suds through the sweater. Rinse in luke warm water. Gently squeeze, don’t wring. Lay sweater on the towel and shape to original outline. Dry on a flat surface away from sun and heat. Garbage disposers are groan ing with melon rinds, corn cobs and fruit pits.
