The purpose of this outing was to attend the regular spring meeting of the North west Christmas Tree Growers Assn., meeting at the Jay Hofart commercial Christmas tree farm at the Olympia air port. The following comments and observations on the Christmas tree growing business general ly and in the state of Wash ington particularly may be of interest to people in Clacka mas county who are growing Christmas trees, says Wills. As guests of the Jay Hofart Christmas tree operation, the group was shown all the phases of the nursery operation and the field growing procedures of the commercial Christmas tree business. The Jay Hofart Co. has been in operation since 1889 and are getting into the Christmas tree operation on a very large scale. Working tor the benefit oi Christmas tree growers and other woodland owners in Clackamas county is the Clack amas County Farm Forestry Assn. This group meets fre quently in the Molalla area and has recently started operation in the Sandy area. Through this medium, all interested people are given instruction on the proper procedures and techniques in raising Christ mas trees. In addition, many thousands oí acres in Christmas trees in cluding one patch in Clacka mas county near Clarkes of 70 acres are planted. These trees include Douglas Fir and Scotch Pine primarily and are being raised for the Los Angeles market. While in the Olympia area, the Clackamas county men also toured the Kirk Christmas tree operation which is another large commercial producer. At the Kirk operation, recently' planted fields of 100 acres or more in which approximately 1500 trees are planted per acre were viewed. The group also saw the lat est in weed control by cultiva tion, chemical means, and pruning practices taken to in sure a well informed tree. The Kirks have been empha sizing Scotch Pine as a Christ mas tree variety and indicate that they have no difficulty getting a dollar a foot on the Los Angeles market for their high quality product. Local Trees Best Clackamas county produces a better quality Christmas tree than the Washington tree, ac cording to Wills, and has a better soil type and climatic conditions that make stronger trees with a deeper green color. However, the growers in the Olympia area are certainly tooled up to produce trees in large volume and growers in Clackamas county may need to pay close attention to these developments. Rooting Zone Gives Nutrients The “ideal soil” for plant growth should have a deep rooting zone from which plants can take both water and nu- trients. This zone is at least 18 inch- es deep; most plants do bet- ter if it is thicker, even 4 to 6 feet. A shallow soil cannot hold enough water and nutri ents to keep plants growing at their best. The ideal soil is loamy in texture — it consists of a fav orable mixture of sand, silt, and clay particles. Sands take in water readily but retain only a small part of it. Clays hold a great deal of water, but tend to become hard and massive when dry. Soil structure should permit water to enter easily, roots to penetrate deeply and air to move in and out freely. The surface, ideally, is moderate ly cloddy, not fine and dusty.
